Known Mead Documents

This list of publications is based the bibliography published in Mind Self and Society from the Perspective of a Social Behaviorist, and originally prepared by Professor Albert M. Dunham, with the assistance of John M. Brewster, V. Lewis Bassie and Prof. Merritt H. Moore. That document listed 68 publication, two of which were published posthumously.

In 1978, Hans Joas extended the list by updating the posthumous publications and several rediscovered articles, bring the count to 100 or 104 depending on how you count Mead's articles for Mathews and Birney's Dictionary of Religion and Ethics(1921). When the list was published in English, Joas (1985) added a review of Simmel's Philosophie des Geldes, and two social work articles uncovered by John Burger, for a total of 107. We do not include Darnell Rucker's (1968) accidental republication of "The Child and his Environment" in this count nor Dewey's important The School and Society (1900), which was edited by George and Helen Castle Mead.

In 1988, Mary Jo Deegan added three additional articles: "Fitting the Educational System into the Fabric of Government," "Social Reconstruction in a Time of War" and "Mary McDowell," bringing the total to 110. Gary A. Cook (1993) further extended the list, adding material from Mead's tenure at University of Michigan, a unattributed article in Survey that is inferred to be Mead's from other references, and several other pieces, bringing the count to 113.  Research by others continues to uncover other documents. In 1994 and 1996, Cook brought into print two previously unpublished Mead manuscripts from the collection held at the University of Chicago —  a review of Dewey's Human Nature and Conduct and an essay on Royce and James. Through a mix up in citations, the librarians at University in Chicago uncovered a previously uncited document from the City Club records, — a lengthy proposal for legislation prepared by a City Club committee chaired by Mead. Because the list continues to grow we cannot call it "complete," just "up-to-date" with a count of 120 documents.

In 2001 Mary Jo Deegan successfully brought into print the only book Mead had prepared for publication. The galleys have been on file at the Regenstein Library, as part of the Addenda to the original collection.

The Mead Project hopes to republish all of this material as soon as copyright limitations permit. However, several documents will not be available within the editors' expected life-time and are unlikely to be added to this web site.  We are making efforts to obtain copies of all other publications.

In September 1999, we added a short list of some of the documents from the Mead Papers archived in the Special Collections Library at the University of Chicago's Regenstein Library.  These archivists maintain the collection of Mead Papers assembled by his family, friends, students and colleagues after his death. A complete list of their holdings can be acquired from the Special Collections Librarian and is a worthwhile investment for any serious Mead scholar.  The list presented here contains only references to unpublished fragments and student notes on courses taught by Mead.

The list is split into four sections. The first lists Mead's publications during his lifetime and documents published after his death. The second section lists some previously unpublished essay fragments the originals of which reside in the Regenstein library. The third lists other unpublished essays and fragments available through the Regenstein Library, with reference to the box and file in which they are stored. The fourth provides an list of student notes on Mead courses held in the collection but not prepared for publication. As mentioned earlier, documents from Lists 2 and 3 can be acquired from the Regenstein Library.

In 2006, we added a new reference that doesn't represent new material. The 1917 pamphlet "The Conscientious Objector," was also published as an article in the December 23 1917 New York Times.

III. Unpublished Fragments Archived with the Regenstein Library Collection

The titles of these fragments are taken from the Finder's Guide to the George Herbert Mead Papers and the Addenda, prepared by Daniel Meyer (1981, 1995).  For wont of a better approach, we have arranged them alphabetically. Their location in the collection is identified by the box and file numbers. For example "in box 9.3" refers to a document in file 3 in box 9 of the main collection. Alternatively "in box A2.18" refers to a document in file 18 in box 2 of the Addenda to the main collection. Copies of documents can be acquired from the library for research purposes.  We hope to be able to present these documents as part of the George's Page over the next decade.

IV. Student Notes Archived within the Regenstein Library

After Mead's death, considerable work was invested in gathering together student notes from Mead's lectures. This is a partial list of the collection held within the Mead Papers at the Regenstein Library. Their location in the collection is identified by the box and file. For example "in box 9.3" refers to a document in file 3 in box 9 of the main collection. Alternatively "in box A2.18" refers to a document in file 18 in box 2 of the Addenda to the main collection. Copies of documents can be acquired from the library for research purposes.  We have arranged them chronologically. We hope to be able to present these documents as part of the George's Page over the next decade.
