Fellowships, Scholarships, Bursaries, Awards and Financial Assistance  
Various forms of financial support are available to graduate students. In addition to the scholarships and awards listed below, Brock University awards fellowships, scholarships, bursaries and graduate (teaching and research) assistantships to incoming and full-time returning students on the basis of academic merit. Students' offer letters include financial funding information that outlines, where appropriate, their particular graduate funding package. Information and definitions regarding financial support can be found at: brocku.ca/graduate-studies/current-students Graduate students are encouraged to apply for any of the awards and scholarships for which they are eligible. To be eligible to apply for internal and external awards, scholarships and bursaries, graduate students must be registered as a full-time student. A student who is withdrawn from the university or has a change of status will have their scholarship eligibility reviewed and adjustments to their financial support made.

Please note: Deadline dates have been established for the internal Scholarships/Awards. If the deadline date falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the deadline date is 4:30 p.m. the next working day. The value of the award indicated is the amount awarded for the 2010/2011 academic year. Applications for Internal Graduate Scholarships are available on the Faculty of Graduate Studies website at brocku.ca/graduate-studies/current-students/student-forms Chancellors Chairs' Graduate Scholarship in Physics Value: $1001 An annual award to a student who is entering or continuing in a graduate program in Physics who demonstrates academic excellence and financial need. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Faculty and Staff from the Department of Physics Application Deadline Date: February 1. Danielle Anne Parks Memorial Scholarship Value: $1869 An annual award to a graduate student in the Classics program whose research is in Greco-Roman culture and history. The student's research must require travel to the Mediterranean or to view a collection on Greco-Roman culture and history in Europe or a Mediterranean country. This scholarship may not be used for unstructured travel. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Marinelli/Niagara Duty Free Shops Scholarship Value: to be determined An award made annually to either an undergraduate or a graduate student who is enrolled in a program in the Faculty of Business and who is a resident of the Niagara peninsula. The applicant must meet Ontario residency requirements and demonstrate financial need. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships to receive the award annually throughout his or her Brock career, contingent on maintaining a minimum 75% average. Donor: Niagara Falls Duty Free Shop Application Deadline Date: October 1. David C. Murray and Elizabeth Surtees Niagara Historical Society Post-Graduate Scholarship in the History of Niagara Value: $1864 An annual award to a graduate student in the MA in History graduate program who is carrying out their major research paper on a Niagara local history subject, preferably focused on such topics as the political, economic, social, industrial, agricultural, maritime, or related history of the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake or former township of Niagara. Should no eligible student be researching within the narrowly defined geographic area described above, a major research paper on a topic as above within the Niagara Region will be considered. The recipient will donate a hard copy and electronic format of their paper, prior to their convocation ceremony, to the Niagara Historical Society. The student award recipient retains copyright to their major research paper while the Niagara Historical Society will have full, unrestricted and unimpeded reproduction rights to the document and may market it in pamphlet form or as part of an anthology. Dr. Johanna Tito and Dr. David Goicoechea Scholarship Value: $928 An annual award to a student who has graduated from the Brock undergraduate degree program in Philosophy and is entering into the Brock Master's program in Philosophy. The recipient must meet OSAP residency requirements and demonstrate financial need. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Brock University Philosophical Society and friends of David Goicoechea Application Deadline Date: October 1. Department of Physics Graduate Scholarship Value: $1021 An annual award to a full-time graduate student in the first or subsequent year of a graduate program in Physics. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic excellence and must demonstrate financial need. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Dick Pound Award Value: $177 An annual award to a full-time graduate student in a Master's program in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences who demonstrates financial need and meet Ontario residency requirements. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Dick Pound Application Deadline Date: October 1. Distinguished Graduating Student Award Value: $100 Awarded to the most distinguished graduate for each graduate program. The award and a certificate will be awarded at Spring convocation. No application is required. Dr. G.M.C. Sprung Memorial Award Value: $333 An annual award to a graduate student in the Master's program in Philosophy who has achieved a minimum average of 75%. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Family and friends of Dr. G.M.C. Sprung Application Deadline Date: February 1. Dr. Raymond and Mrs. Sachi Moriyama Graduate Fellowship Value: $3785/student An annual award to an entering graduate student in each of the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, Education, Humanities, Mathematics and Science and Social Sciences. Donor: Dr. Raymond and Mrs. Sachi Moriyama No application is required. Doris White Memorial Graduate Bursary Value: $4722 An annual bursary to a full-time graduate student(s) enrolled in a graduate program. Preference will be given to a graduate student pursuing study in Music. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and meet Ontario residency requirements. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: The Estate of Doris White Application Deadline Date: February 1. Edgar and Irmgard Penner Scholarship Value: $3272 Awarded annually to one or more international students, in the first or subsequent year of a graduate program, who has achieved high academic standing and does not receive financial support from his/her country. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Irmgard Penner Application Deadline Date: February 1. Ellen Speck Memorial Bursary Value: $336 An annual bursary to a graduate student in the Political Science program, who demonstrates financial need. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Denis and Norma Murphy Application Deadline Date: February 1. Excellence in Research Award Value: $1,500/student An annual award to three graduate students who have displayed excellence in research. The recipient may be full-time, part-time, domestic or international. Each graduate program may nominate one student for each relevant award category. The successful recipients will receive acknowledgment at the time of his/her convocation. No application is required. Faculty of Education Fellowships Value: $1,500 A maximum of three graduate fellowships are awarded each year to new and continuing full-time students in the Master of Education program who have achieved high academic standing. Prospective candidates for fellowships will be considered on application for admission to the Master of Education program. Continuing students will be considered after successful completion of their first year of study. In order to qualify, students must be registered as full-time students. Faculty of Education Graduate Bursary Value: $1,000 A number of graduate bursaries are awarded each year to continuing full-time students in the Master of Education program who are experiencing financial difficulties. Only one such bursary can be obtained during the student's Master of Education program. Application details and deadlines can be obtained from the Faculty of Education. Applicants must provide evidence of on-going participation in the program, a statement outlining financial need, and a reference letter from a full-time faculty member describing the student's academic progress. No application is required. Fidelis Kambilige Memorial Scholarship in Political Science Value: $221 An annual award to a graduate student currently enrolled in the MA Political Science graduate program who demonstrates academic merit. Preference is given to a student from Ghana. If there is no eligible Ghanaian student, the scholarship is to be awarded to an international student. Ronald Brown Graduate Award Value: $598 An annual award to a full-time student in good standing in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science who has demonstrated financial need. Applicants must complete an Application for internal Graduate Scholarships. The award was established in 2002 in memory of Dean Ron Brown. Donor: Family and Friends of Dean Ron Brown and the faculty and staff of Brock University. Application Deadline Date: February 1. Gordon R. Finlay Scholarship Value: to be determined An annual award to an outstanding graduate student in Chemistry who has an excellent record in research, course work and demonstrating. Preference will be given to international students. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships, available from the Graduate Studies. Donor: The G. R. Finlay Family Application Deadline Date: February 1. Governor General's Gold Medal The Governor General's Gold Medal is awarded at Spring convocation to a graduate student who achieves the highest academic standing in a graduate degree program. Graduates from both the Spring and the previous Fall convocation are eligible. No application is required. Green Shield Canada Graduate Fellowship in Health Sciences Value: to be determined An annual award to a full-time graduate student in the Applied Health Science program, who demonstrates outstanding academic merit. Applicants must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Green Shield Canada Application Deadline Date: February 1. Harrison-Thompson Bursary Trust Value: $5,000 (one award for each listed faculty) An annual award for one full-time student in each of the five faculties: Applied Health Sciences, Business, Humanities, Mathematics and Science, and Social Sciences. The recipient must meet Ontario residency requirements and demonstrate financial need. The student must complete the Harrison-Thompson Bursary Trust Application. The award is renewable based on academic excellence and demonstrated financial need. Donor: Bernard Harrison Application Deadline Date: February 1. Ida Marietta Houston Graduate Scholarship Value: $3742 An annual award to a graduate student in the Applied Health Sciences graduate program who demonstrate academic merit. Preference will be given to a student whose education or research focuses on palliative care. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. John Edds Prize in Master of Accountancy Value: $400.00 An annual award to a student who has demonstrated academic excellence in the Master of Accountancy program. Donor: John Edds International Society for Electrophysiology and Kinesiology (ISEK) John V. Basmajian Memorial Graduate Award Value: $392 An annual award to a full-time domestic or international MA, MSc or PhD graduate student in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences. The student must demonstrate high academic merit and be conducting research related to electromographic kinesiology of skeletal muscle. This award is not applicable to research into cardiac muscle, cardiology, or cardiac rehabilitation. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships and must submit the following documents. 1. A standard abstract formatted in accordance with the ISEK submission guidelines (contact Applied Health Science graduate program for Appendix 1) 2. A two-page (600 word) outline should explain the rationale for the work, purpose and/or hypothesis, research design, results, discussion that highlights the significance of the work and key references. Up to two figures may be included within the two-page limit. 3. A one-page (300 word) letter from the student's supervisor that explains the role and contribution(s) of the applicant to the research project. Stephen Hartman Scholarship in Chemistry Value: $639 An annual award to a graduate student entering or continuing in the Master of Science or Doctoral Chemistry program who has demonstrated academic excellence. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Dr. J. Stephen Hartman Application Deadline Date: February 1. Jack Noble Book Prize Value: Certificate from the Brock University Bookstore The book prize is awarded to a Master of Education student at Spring and Fall Convocations, who has achieved the highest academic standing in the program. The prize is awarded in the name of Jack Noble on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education. Donor: Jack Noble No application is required. Kenneth Frederick White Memorial Graduate Scholarship No application is required. Value: to be determinedudent Scholarship An annual award to a full-time graduate student(s) enrolled in the Master of Arts program in English. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and meet Ontario residency requirements. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Leading the Way Graduate Student Scholarship Value: $965 An annual award to an entering or current graduate student in any graduate program and who demonstrates academic merit. Application Deadline Date: February 1. Application is not required. Marilyn J. Rose Graduate Award for Academic Excellence in English Language and Literature Value: $1220 An annual award to an outstanding thesis or major research paper student enrolled in the Master of Arts program in English. This award will support the student during the writing of the exit research requirement and will be paid during the student's final (normally Spring) term. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Marilyn Rose Application Deadline Date: February 2. Martin Kusy Faculty of Business Graduate Scholarship Value: $2238 An annual award to an entering student in the Faculty of Business who can demonstrate academic merit. This scholarship will be rotated among the five Faculty of Business graduate programs - Master of Business Administration, Master of Business Administration (International Student Program), Master of Accountancy, International Master of Accountancy and Master of Science in Management. The student must complete an Application for internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Dr. Martin Kusy Application Deadline Date: October 1. Michael H. Spironello Memorial Fellowship Value: $349 An annual award to an entering or current student in the Biological Sciences graduate program. The student must demonstrate academic merit and community or environmental service and/or other external activities such as interest in the arts, music, nature and/or other external activities such as interests in the arts, music, nature and/or physical activity. The student must complete and Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Entomogen Inc. (President Fiona Hunter and Vice-President Michael J. Bidochka) Application Deadline Date: February 1. Mohamed Dore Graduate Research Scholarship in Economics Value: $1666 An annual award to a student who demonstrates academic merit and is pursuing a graduate degree through the Department of Economics, or an MSc through the Faculty of Business, and is actively involved in research in the area of economics. Preference will be given to students who are bilingual in any two languages. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Roelof Makken Application Deadline Date: February 1. Niagara District Chartered Accountants Association Award in Master of Accountancy Value: $666 Awarded to a student entering the Master of Accountancy (MAcc) program with the highest entering average and demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to students from the Niagara Region. The student will be nominated by the department/program. Applicants must meet OSAP residency requirements and complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Niagara District Chartered Accountants Association Application Deadline Date: February 1. Oded Bar-Or Graduate Travel Award in Pediatric Exercise Medicine Value: $1022 An annual award to a student in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences graduate program who demonstrates financial need and high academic standing. An international student working in the area of Pediatric Exercise Medicine may be considered. This award is primarily used to help offset the travel costs incurred in the presentation of their research in the field of Pediatric Exercise Medicine at a national or international scientific conference. Applicants must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Family, friends and colleagues of Oded Bar-Or Application Deadline Date: February 1. Ontario Paper Thorold Foundation Graduate Award Value: $1440 An annual award to a graduate student pursuing a graduate degree with a focus on environmental issues, and who has a high academic standing. Students entering or continuing in a graduate program are eligible for this award. Applicants must complete an application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: The Ontario Paper Thorold Foundation Application Deadline Date: February 1 Physics Faculty and Staff Graduate Bursary Value: $470 An annual award to a graduate student who is entering or continuing in a graduate program in Physics. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic excellence and must demonstrate financial need. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Faculty and Staff from the Department of Physics. Application Deadline Date: February 1. President's Surgite Award Value: to be determined, plus a Certificate of Recognition The award is intended to recognize those students who have been outstanding in one or more of the following areas: demonstrated exemplary leadership in a student club, organization association or team; did something exceptional that helped to advance Brock's academic reputation; made a significant contribution to student life at Brock; provided a valuable service to Brock or the broader community. The application forms for this award are available from the Student Awards and Financial Aid Office (ST402) brocku.ca/safa Fall Award application forms are accepted from September 1 - October 15 and the Winter application forms are accepted from January 1 - February 15. Applicants are selected by the Senate Committee on Awards and Bursaries. Professor John R. A. Mayer Graduate Scholarship Value: $870 An award made annually to a graduate student in the Master's degree program in Philosophy who has the highest academic standing. Applicants must meet Ontario residency requirements and complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Brock Philosophical Society Application Deadline Date: February 1. Ralph D. Morris Graduate Student Award Value: $500 An annual award to a student in the first or second-year of graduate studies at Brock who has been involved in university activities which reflect well on graduate students or extra-curricular activities that enhance the Brock University's role in the community. Hearn Scholarship Value: $1133 An annual award to a full-time graduate student in the first or subsequent year of a graduate degree in Physics who has achieved high academic standing. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Established in 1989 in memory of Dr. Richard L. Hearn, Brock University's first Chancellor. Hearn Application Deadline Date: February 1 Skrubbeltrang Miatello Family Bursary Value: to be determined An annual bursary to a full-time graduate student(s) enrolled in graduate studies who demonstrates financial need. Preference given to a domestic graduate student who is a varsity athlete and whose record includes active service to the broader community. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Ian Ritchie Application Deadline Date: February 1. Michael H. Spironello Memorial Fellowship Value: $349 An annual award to an entering or current student in the Biological Sciences graduate program. The Doug Shaver Memorial Award Value: $308 An annual award to a full-time graduate student entering the Master of Arts in Applied Disability Studies, Master of Applied Disability Studies or the Graduate Diploma in Applied Disability Studies whose area of study is persons with intellectual disabilities with challenging behaviours. If a student cannot be chosen from one of the Applied Disability Studies programs, an alternate program that may be considered is Child and Youth Studies. The award will be given to a student who demonstrates academic achievement and financial need and meets Ontario residency requirements. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Dr. Dorothy Griffiths Application Deadline Date: February 1. The Kathy Tweedy Memorial Award Value: $308 An annual award to a full-time graduate student entering the Master of Arts in Applied Disability Studies, Master of Applied Disability Studies or the Graduate Diploma in Applied Disability Studies whose area of study is persons with intellectual disabilities who have a coexisting mental health need. The award will be given to a student who demonstrates academic achievement and financial need and meets Ontario residency requirements. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Dr. Dorothy Griffiths Application Deadline Date: February 1. The MA Applied Linguistics (TESL) Scholarship Value: to be determined An annual award to a graduate student who has a minimum average of 80% in the MA Applied Linguistics (TESL) program, and who in the judgment of the MA Applied Linguistics (TESL) Program Committee, provides the most compelling arguments in a written paper (maximum 2 pages) explaining why they perceive themselves to have academic merit and thus a suitable candidate for the award. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Department of Applied Linguistics Application Deadline Date: February 1. The Susan Tough Award Value: $286 An annual award to a full-time graduate student entering the Master of Arts in Applied Disability Studies, Master of Applied Disability Studies or the Graduate Diploma in Applied Disability Studies whose area of study is persons with intellectual disabilities with challenging behaviours. The award will be given to a student who demonstrates academic achievement and financial need and meets Ontario residency requirements. This award will be made to a graduate student in the Centre for Applied Disability Studies to support attendance at a conference to present their research. If a student from these programs cannot be chosen, an alternate program that may be considered is Child and Youth Studies. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. The Tomlinson Entrance Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Value: to be determined An annual award to a full-time domestic student entering a graduate program in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science with first-class standing, or an admission average of not less than 85%, and who demonstrates financial need and meets Ontario residency requirements. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Dr. Richard H. Tomlinson Application Deadline Date: October 1. The Tomlinson Entrance Scholarship for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Value: to be determined An annual award to a full-time domestic or international student entering a graduate program in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science with first-class standing or an admission average of not less than 85%. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Dr. Richard H. Tomlinson Application Deadline Date: October 1. The Vera C. Boldt Memorial Award Value: to be determined An annual award made in June to a Master’s student in the MA in Studies in Comparative Literatures and Arts program at Brock University who achieved the highest average based on the grades (minimum of 6 courses) from both the previous Fall and Winter terms. If two students achieve the same grade, the award will be divided between the two students. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Leslie Anne Boldt The Vice President of Research Award Value: $309 An annual award to an entering international graduate student in a faculty other than Business or Education. The student must demonstrate academic merit with a minimum average of 75%. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Office of Research Services Application Deadline Date: February 1. The Victoria Andic-Whealy Award in Memory of Martin Andic Value: $360 An annual entrance award to the most outstanding graduate student entering the Philosophy graduate program. The student must demonstrate financial need and meet Ontario residency requirements. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Brock Philosophical Society Application Deadline Date: October 1. Thompson-Harrison Graduate Scholarship Value: $824 An annual award to an international student studying Physics at the graduate level who has achieved a high academic standing in-course and whose studies are not fully funded by his/her government. Should no physics international graduate student qualify, the scholarship will be awarded to a top chemistry graduate student, qualifying under the same conditions. In the event that no international student qualifies, the scholarship will be awarded, in the first instance, to a physics student who has attained a high academic standing on entry or in-course. Should no physics student qualify, the scholarship will be awarded to a chemistry student, qualifying under the same conditions. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: Bernard Harrison Application Deadline Date: February 1. Vandenhoff Glassblowing Graduate Entrance Scholarship in Chemistry Value: to be determined An annual award to an outstanding international graduate student entering a Chemistry graduate program with a minimum overall admission average of 80%. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: John Vandenhoff Application Deadline Date: October 1. Vern and Donna Sutherland Memorial Bursary Value: to be determined An annual bursary to an undergraduate or graduate student in financial need without regard to the year of study. The application forms for this bursary are available from the Student Awards & Financial Aid Office (ST 402). You may apply for this bursary beginning August 1. W. D. Hatch Memorial Scholarship Value: $1157 An annual award to an outstanding student during the first or second-year of a graduate program. The candidate must have a first-class academic standing and thesis research is concerned with, in the first instance, in the field of viticulture or oenology or, secondly, with the application of Biotechnology relating to agriculture. The recipient must demonstrate financial need and meet Ontario residency requirements. The student must complete an Application for Internal Graduate Scholarships. Donor: W. Douglas Hatch Application Deadline Date: February 1 Wendy Murphy Memorial Awards Value: $1500 The award will be made annually to a returning Psychology graduate student based on consistent academic excellence and collegiality. The candidate will be nominated by a selection committee appointed by the Psychology Department. Donor: Family and friends of Wendy Murphy No application is required. Zelma Reive Graduate Bursary Value: $477 An annual award to a graduate student in good standing in the Political Science program, who demonstrates financial need. Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario Research Master's Studentship Awards The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario offers a limited number of Master's Studentship awards to highly qualified candidates who have completed or are in the last year of a Baccalaureate degree. The Travelling Scholarship is available to graduates of Canadian universities who pursue graduate study in the United States or the United Kingdom in the areas of international relations or industrial relations.
