Admission Guidelines

#Full-time Canadian, U.S. and International Secondary School Applicants
(currently attending or recently completed secondary school)

The following prerequisite chart serves as a guideline for the types of courses that may be required for admissions consideration. A background in these specific subjects will provide the best preparation for your chosen field.

#Full-time Canadian and U.S. University Transfer Applicants

(currently attending university)

If you wish to transfer from a Canadian university to Brock, you must present a minimum overall average of 60 per cent, or equivalent, with higher averages required where enrolments are limited. You may wish to contact the Admissions department (admissns@brocku.ca) prior to applying. Additionally, you must be eligible to re-register at your home institution (we will not consider applicants on academic suspension).

Transfer credit will be assessed once you have applied to Brock, and will only be granted for those courses passed which are appropriate to your chosen program. If the grading scheme from your other university differs from that of Brock University, the grades will be translated into equivalent Brock grades and admissibility and transfer credit assessed in these terms.

#Full-time International University Transfer Applicants
(currently attending university)

If you wish to transfer to Brock from a recognized international university, you must present a university transcript showing passing grades (normally the equivalent to a 60% average according to Brock calculations) with higher averages required where enrolments are limited.

#Full-time Canadian Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology Transfer Applicants
(currently attending college or completed)

Graduates of a three-year diploma program with a cumulative average of 70 percent, or an average of 70 percent in the last two semesters of a three-year diploma program, will be considered for admission, and may be awarded up to five credits. In some cases, where programs at the college and Brock are quite compatible, up to seven and a half credits may be awarded with the approval of the department.

Applicants who have completed two years of a three-year diploma program or graduates of a two-year program with a cumulative average of 70 percent will be considered for admission and may be awarded up to three credits. In cases where the programs at the college and Brock are quite compatible, up to 5 credits may be awarded with the approval of the department.

Applicants, who have completed one year of a college program, may be considered for admission to first year with no transfer credits provided that an average of 75 percent has been achieved and the program is of an academic nature. Admission is not guaranteed by attainment of the minimum requirements. The awarding of transfer credit is based primarily upon:

1. the compatibility of the previous college program with the Brock program;
2. course content;
3. grades achieved in courses.

#Part-time Applicants

Applicants who wish to study part time at Brock, must meet one of the admissions criteria outlined above (the same criteria or full-time applicants). If applicants do not meet any of these criteria, they should apply as a mature applicant.

#Mature Applicants

Applicants who meet the following criteria listed below, may be considered for admission as a mature applicant:

• do not meet any of the admission criteria listed above;
• have been out of formal schooling for at least two years;
• are at least 21 years old;
• a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

If selected for admission, applicants would initially be limited to part-time study, and would need to achieve a minimum 60 per cent overall average on the first two credits before applying for full-time study.

#Second Degree Applicants

With the exception of the BA/BEd, BSc/BEd and BPhEd/BEd degrees, students may not pursue two undergraduate degrees concurrently. An individual who wishes to pursue a second undergraduate degree must:

• have successfully completed the first degree with a minimum 65 percent overall average;
• make application for admission and be admitted to the second degree program;
• fulfill all the specific requirements of each degree program including prerequisites, co-requisites and honours standing requirements (where appropriate).

To obtain a second degree, students must have completed, with satisfactory standing, at least 50 percent more credits beyond the first degree. The minimum total number of credits for both degrees are:

• for a 20 credit degree and a second 15 credit degree: 28 credits.
• for a 20 credit degree and a second 20 credit degree: 30 credits.
• for a 15 credit degree and a second 15 credit degree: 23 credits.
• for a 15 credit degree and a second 20 credit degree: 28 credits.

(an exception exists for the BAcc as a subsequent degree. Please see the appropriate Calendar entry).

An applicant who has a bachelor's degree from Brock or another institution may be allowed to pursue undergraduate studies leading to a second bachelor's degree of the same or another designation under the following conditions:

• the principal area of study or academic emphasis must be distinct from that of the first degree. Prior approval from the principal area of study of the second degree must be obtained from the Dean or designated of the appropriate faculty;
• the student must complete, with satisfactory standing, at least 50 percent more credits beyond the first degree (see required number of credits above);
• the student must meet all program requirements for the second degree.

#Certificate Program Applicants

Certificate programs not requiring an undergraduate degree for admission:

Admission requirements are the same as those for degree programs (see above). Students admitted to a certificate program will normally be limited to part-time studies. Registration will normally be limited to a maximum of two credits in the Fall/Winter Session, a maximum of one credit in the Spring Session and a maximum of one credit in the Summer Session.
