2011-2012 Internship Team
2011-2012 Internship Team
My name is Kyley Stevenson, and I am currently in my third year at Brock University majoring in Recreation and Leisure with a minor in Psychology. Along with my studies, I enjoy being active through running and playing most sports, and furthermore I enjoy spending my time in the outdoors, whether it is camping, hiking or bike riding. Since I enjoy the outdoors and pushing myself while staying in my challenge zone, I thought applying for a rope specialist job at Youth University would be a great fit for me. This has been my first year with Youth University, in the spring (2011) I worked as a ropes course specialist, where I had experience facilitating programs and assisting staff out at the ropes course. This was an amazing experience for me because I was able to help participants reach their goals and overcome their fears in a positive atmosphere. As of September 2011, I have started an internship position with Youth University, where I will continue to learn, grow and develop within the recreational field.
My name is Andrew Giroux and I am in my third year of studies at Brock University in the concurrent education program (Intermediate/Senior).My major is Biology with a second teachable in Math. Aside from my studies, when I have some down time, I keep busy playing guitar, snowboarding, hiking and pursuing my passion for film and photography. I believe that students learn best when learning is hands-on, fun and engaging; learning isn’t about the right answer, it’s about how you arrived there. I have been involved with Youth University for three years now working with hundreds of youth from all over Ontario. Youth University has been a fantastic opportunity to share my knowledge and passion for learning with others. I have taken on a wide variety of positions including volunteering with out-reach programs, spring camp instructor and spring camp senior staff. These roles have allowed me to develop my facilitation skills, risk-management and my ability to work efficiently and effectively with a team of staff. This year I will continue to develop my professional skill set through the internship program. I am looking forward to another fantastic year of learning and sharing knowledge with staff, students and campers I encounter.
My name is Lisa Martin and I am a fourth year student in Community Recreation and Leisure Studies at Brock University with a teachable in Physical Education. I enjoy being active in many sports such as soccer and snowboarding, keeping me involved year-round. I have a passion for working with youth, which has led me down a path towards having future careers as a teacher and a recreation coordinator who specializes in youth programs. I have been fortunate enough to come across many great experiences in the Brock community during my time here as a student. My first experience was in a private Recreation and Leisure course, where we created and implemented a camp known as Camp LEAD for underprivileged youth in the Niagara Region. This involvement led me to my current work at Youth University. Last year I had the opportunity to be a Spring Leadership Camp Instructor at Youth University and my experience was like no other. This year my position has moved to the internship program, where I am eager to take the knowledge and skills I have obtained from my past experiences and use them to my full potential. I am also excited to take this opportunity to learn and grow as an individual as well as a recreation professional and prospective teacher. I hold a high value to Youth University, as the impact they make on their staff as well as their participants is more than imaginable. The opportunities that they provide are endless; from working directly with youth to planning and programming to administration and logistics, there are always experiences to be had and room to learn and grow. The colleagues I work with and individuals I’ve met along the way also put much value into my experience at Youth University. I have met, and continue to meet; amazing people who have had a significant impact on my life and contributed to my experiences and growth. I know that later on in life, I will look back and remember this experience; I can only hope that others with similar passions will have the same opportunities and experiences.
