Jonathan Nelson

My name is Jonathan and I am proud to be a part of Youth University’s Internship Team! I am a fourth year Concurrent Education student specializing in the Intermediate and Senior grades. Once graduated, I will be able to teach Chemistry, Physics and French at the secondary school level. My ultimate career goal is to be the teacher that can make Chemistry fun for all students. I love being active in the Brock community - I am currently an official for intramural volleyball and basketball, and have worked in the SDC’s Math and Science Drop-In Centre. I have been thoroughly involved with Youth University since 2009, stepping into roles such as the Summer Camp Coordinator, Spring Science Instructor, Summer Enrichment Instructor, Fall Program Instructor and Social Media Coordinator. This summer, I am extremely excited to once again fill the Summer Camp Coordinator position – through my internship position. While here at YU, I have gained an enormous amount of knowledge and skills ranging from facilitating robotics programs for school groups to belaying at Brock’s High Ropes Courses and Rock Wall. I am passionate about working with kids of all ages, in any setting, and I love watching kids persevere at anything they set their minds to. When I’m not working with kids, I love being involved in sports. I play on Brock’s Ultimate Frisbee Touring Team as well as Intramural Volleyball and Badminton teams, and in the winter I like taking my snowboard for a spin. While enjoying this great opportunity here at YU, I have been able to develop confidence and skills that I will surely find invaluable in the teaching world once I have graduated. I am looking forward to continuing to learn as much as I can while contributing everything I can to ensure that every child we encounter has a positive learning experience, one they will hopefully remember for the rest of their lives.

Devin Kellaway

My name is Devin Kellaway and I’m entering my fourth year of the Concurrent Education program here at Brock. After graduating I am looking forward to a graduate level education program in school administration. When I’m not working or studying, you’ll catch me biking around the Bruce Trail or practicing piano. While I am developing Music and Geography as teachables at the junior-intermediate level, I am passionate about making elementary subjects fun and exciting for all students. Youth University has been a fantastic part of my Brock experience since 2009, and has allowed me to experience first-hand the adventures of student leadership. Youth University has also helped me realize that students get the most out of learning when they’re having fun and enjoying what they’re doing, and this is something I’ll definitely be bringing to my classroom. I’ve had the opportunity to take on many different roles: Summer Enrichment Camp Instructor, Spring Science Camp Instructor, Day Program Instructor and curriculum planner to name a few. My most recent and my most impactful experience at Youth University is my position in the internship program, where I am practicing and becoming confident in skills that will allow me to be a successful teacher, and ultimately an effective member of school administration. I’m sure that when I start my career as an educator, I’ll be able to think back to my experiences here and think “Hey, I learned how to do this at YU!”

Laura Tirone

My name is Laura Tirone and I am a fourth year Concurrent Education student finishing my degree in Science at Brock University. The teachables I have developed are in Chemistry and Math and I hope one day to teach in the junior grades. I am passionate about education and through my career I hope to be able to inspire young people to be the best they can be. In addition to my studies at Brock I am a member of the Varsity Women’s Soccer Team and an Intern with Youth University. This is my third year working for YU and I really have and continue to enjoy the opportunities and experiences the camp has provided me with. I have had the opportunity to grow with the Youth University program, starting out as a science camp counselor and stepping up into the science senior staff position and I have continued my journey as an intern because I know I have more to give and there is so much more for me to learn. I hold the program in very high regards as it is a rare opportunity for prospective teachers to work in a position that allows them to explore classroom management, lesson planning and delivery, program planning and curriculum design in such an intimate way. I hope to pursue a career in teaching upon graduation and through this internship I will have the opportunity to continue my development as a future educator. I will be able to gain valuable experience working alongside colleagues with similar passions for education and career goals and different ideas and perspectives.
