Brock Niagara Penguins, administered through the Centre for Healthy Development through Sport and
Physical Activity (CHDSPA) at Brock University, has received $30,500 in funding from the Ronald
McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Grant Program.
The mandate of RMHC is to assist registered charities whose programs are community-oriented, and
focus on improving the quality of life for children and families of children with serious and/or life-
threatening illnesses or disabilities.
Brock Niagara Penguins is Niagara's premier competitive swim and gym program for athletes with
physical disabilities. Brock Niagara Penguins is one of the programs offered through Recreational
Services at Brock University.
Funds received will be used to address the objectives of the Brock Niagara Penguins. Sport wheelchairs,
indoor sledges and an accessible pool lift will be installed allowing athletes with more opportunities in
a recreation setting.
Brock Niagara Penguins strives to foster physical activity opportunities for children and youth with
disabilities in a recreational setting. The aim is to have participants experiencing success through
achievement, while developing social and leadership skills that are critical in fostering a healthy and
caring community.
Presently eight athletes and four siblings participate three times per week in the pool/gym and the
program is looking to grow by recruiting new participants.
