Policies regarding

Assignments, Quizzes and Examinations,
and Academic Misconduct

Assignments are due either in class or in seminar on the due date indicated on the course outline, unless otherwise specified by the instructor.

Late written assignments will be penalized by 1/3rd of their value (33.3%) per day or part day, 7 days a week (including weekends and holidays) to a maximum of three days. Assignments will not be accepted after 3 days and will receive a grade of zero.

 Quizzes and Examinations

All quizzes, mid-term examinations, progress examinations and final examinations must be written on the dates indicated in the course outline or on the dates set by the Registrar’s Office. Make yourself aware of the December and April examination dates and do not make any travel arrangements until you are aware of your examination dates, as alternative exams will not be set for travel reasons. Extenuating circumstances for late/missed assignments, quizzes and examinations will be considered on a case-by-case basis and must be supported with valid written documentation (e.g. medical note). Without acceptable documentation missed quizzes and exams will receive a mark of zero and late/missed assignments will be penalized as indicated above. For consideration students need to contact the instructor within a reasonable time frame of the assignment due date or exam date. Students should make themselves aware of Brock University's policies on examinations, at http://www.brocku.ca/webcal/2007/undergrad/areg.html#sec15.

Academic Misconduct and Plagiarism

Because academic integrity is vital to the well-being of the university community, Brock University takes academic misconduct very seriously. Academic misconduct includes plagiarism, which involves presenting the words and ideas of another as if they were your own and other forms of cheating, such as using crib notes during a test or fabricating data for a lab assignment. The penalties for academic misconduct can be very severe. A grade of zero may be given for the assignment or even for the course, and a second offense may result in suspension from the university. Students are advised to make themselves aware of the Brock University Policies on academic misconduct (including plagiarism) at  http://www.brocku.ca/webcal/2007/undergrad/areg.html#sec17.

Students are also reminded that the
Student Development Centre (Schmon Tower, room ST 400) offers free workshops on writing and study skills on avoiding plagiarism.
