Research Interests:
My most recent book Parallel Paths: The Development of Nationalism in Ireland and Quebec was published in 2006. It uses the concepts of path dependence, timing and sequence to explain why nationalism in Ireland and Quebec led to different outcomes, despite the many interesting parallels between the two societies, parallels which are extensively discussed in the book. The book was awarded the Donald Smiley prize for the best book on Canadian politics published in 2006. In my next book, which will also be published by McGill-Queens University Press, I am using a similar approach to explain and compare the ways in which Canada and the United States have dealt with ethnic and religious diversity from colonial times to the present. I believe that the traditional stereotypes of mosaic versus melting pot have some basis in historical reality, which I will explore, but have been greatly exaggerated, especially in Canada since 1971. The manuscript should be finished by December 2012. I also have two forthcoming book chapters, one dealing with the regionalism in Canada and the other with ethnic minorities in Quebec.
