About Ian

Ian J. Bateman, O.B.E., is Professor of Environmental Science and Economics at the School of Environmental Sciences, University of East Anglia, Norwich, United Kingdom. He is the holder of a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award and Director of the Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment (CSERGE), which is the premier cited environmental economics institution in Europe and third globally. Ian is a Member of the Science Advisory Council (SAC) for the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and a member of the UK Natural Capital Committee reporting to the Chancellor of the Exchequer.  

Ian’s research interests include: The integration of natural science and economics to enhance real world decision making; Working with policy makers and the business community to address environmental resource management issues; The formation and valuation of preferences for non-market goods and service (environment, health, etc.); Preference anomalies and behavioural economics; The application of spatial analysis and experimental techniques to integrate environmental economic modelling and valuation.
