My current research focus is on the development on Indian reserves on the Canadian Prairies in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Prairie Indians had lost their previous source of livelihood, the bison, so they needed an alternative. As they were pushed onto reserves, both Indians and the government anticipated that they would farm, but they were not successful. Indians encountered extensive racism, but the biggest factors that held them back were badly specified property rights and the collapse of their social capital.
