WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY

Social Service Worker-Sheridan College

Are there any takers for the Brock/Sheridan Program this year?? I would totally recommend it. I found it to be a LOT more hands-on than university which is a nice change and I think I understood more that way as opposed to just remembering. Plus the placement creates a great opportunity to see what is out there. It would be nice to do two placements- divide the 600 hours- but one is just fine.  Make sure that the students get their police check right away because in like the 6th or 8th week or something you have to do a block week where you volunteer all week and need to have your police check for most places.  I hope we've paved the way smoother for future students!

A Short Testimonial About My Time Here at Brock:
My experience with the Collaborative Policing and Criminal Justice Program between Brock University and Niagara College has been extremely beneficial.  It has allowed me to engage with many different academic ideas and a diversity of opinions.  As well as provided numerous practical opportunities such as access to a variety of volunteer positions, this included Brock FootPatrol and being part of a security detail for Prime Minister Stephen Harper's visit to Niagara College.

I found the faculty and staff of both Niagara and Brock to be extremely knowledgeable about their field, ensuring a rewarding experience and the ability to overcome any challenges. This exposure to diversity and the ability to interact with both people and written material will surely be beneficial when applying for policing positions across Canada.

On a first-name basis
“The faculty and staff in the Psychology department are incredibly friendly. They are almost all on a first-name basis with you once you get to know them. They are very eager to help, even when they are not specifically involved in whatever project you are working on. They are just genuinely interested in sharing their expertise with students in order to help them.”

“Encouraged my passion”
“My experience as a Psychology student at Brock has literally been a life- changing experience. From my first class in introductory psychology, I knew that Psychology was for me. John Mitterer’s passion for the field convinced me to change majors, and I could not have made a better choice. The high quality of Brock’s professors made me fall in love with the field. Next year I will begin graduate studies in Psychology, and I have the professors at Brock to thank for encouraging my passion. Through talking to Psychology majors at other universities, I am convinced that we have one of the best Psychology programs around. The professors care about you as an individual and really want you to succeed.”

Small classes helped learning
“I really enjoyed my time at Brock as a Communications Studies major. I felt connected with my department and faculty, especially during my upper years. The small class sizes and the seminar system contributed to the ‘small school’ atmosphere and everyone knowing each other. Everyone at Brock is here to help you achieve your best in all aspects of your life.”

Police officer attributes success to Brock
“As a recent graduate from the Policing and Criminal Justice program, and a recently hired police officer with the Niagara Regional Police, I would like to convey, to anyone considering a career in policing, the confidence I have in the program offered at Brock. It enabled me to experience not only a traditional academic university experience, but encouraged me to apply the theories and material learned through practical applications at Niagara College. Not only do I employ what I learned at Brock daily on the street, but my entire experience in the program proved invaluable throughout the hiring and interviewing process. The faculty not only presented the material in a professional and challenging manner, but fostered the feeling that students are now part of the greater Brock family. If you want to present yourself as the best possible candidate, one who stands out from all other applicants, consider the Policing and Criminal Justice Program at Brock University.”

Helped get a job in a competitive market
“The faculty of Social Sciences provided me with a diversified education that rivals any other comparable Canadian university. My experience in the Policing and Criminal Justice program has enabled me to explore both the theoretical and practical elements of the criminal justice system. This unique program developed by the Social Sciences department in conjunction with Niagara College has allowed me to develop advanced learning strategies consistent with a degree, along with the hands-on benefits of a diploma. Majoring in Political Science, I gained insight into the dynamics of regional and global politics and greatly enhanced my understanding of the world around me. This, coupled with my diploma, gives me an edge in an already competitive market. The Social Sciences department at Brock provides not just an education, but an avenue to success.”

Staff helped student find her career path
“In my first year at Brock, I majored in Psychology but also found I thoroughly enjoyed my introductory Sociology course. Once I decided more specifically the type of counseling I wanted to focus on doing with my degree, I visited Jeanette Ramsay, Social Sciences academic advisor, who was incredibly informative through helping me determine future course selections. She also suggested I visit Brock’s Career Services.
Career Services were very helpful with their drop-in services, and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. They were enthusiastic about providing various resources and ideas about how to ensure I was taking the most beneficial program for my desired career. Through these processes, the staff aided greatly in my decision to pursue a Sociology degree and was very willing to explain what my next steps should include. As a first-year student who was unsure about the path to my career at first, I appreciate of the staff at Brock for helping me make these important program and career decisions.”
- Melissa Dol, Sociology

Brock gave officer “a competitive edge”
“As a Brock graduate and a recently hired officer with the Hamilton Police Service, I would highly recommend Brock and the Policing and Criminal Justice Program to anyone considering a career in policing. This unique program enabled me to gain practical experience as well as problem-solving and critical- thinking skills that are so essential for police officers today. Social Sciences staff and faculty are there to see you succeed! The Policing program in particular gives those seeking a career in law enforcement a distinctive competitive edge over most other applicants to police services across Ontario. The quality of education, career development opportunities, and positive atmosphere at Brock make it a great place to begin your career. I can directly attribute my success today to the knowledge and experience I have gained in my four years at Brock.”
