The Strategic Transition for Accomplished and Recognized Students (STARS) program allows local high school students in the Niagara Region to register concurrently in one credit at Brock University, free of charge (tuition and ancillary fees waived; studio and other course fees may apply).
To be eligible for the STARS program:
- Students must be taking a less than full-time course load of six Grade 12 U or M courses, be on track to register in a sufficient number of Grade 12 U or M courses to complete the requirements for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), and should be entering their graduating year of studies (e.g., Gr. 12, Gr. 12B)
- A minimum 90% average based on highest four Grade 11 and/or Grade 12 level credits completed
- Be recommended by their school Guidance Counsellor, or for home-based learners, the main educator
- Students must have fulfilled any pre-requisites needed for the Brock undergraduate course(s) they are interested in taking
- Students must be local and studying the OSSD in the Niagara Region
The application process involves completion of a declaration form (free) and completion of an application form ($55).
For participation in STARS during the Summer of 2023 (July-August), the declaration form will open on May 1, 2023 and close on May 30, 2023.
For participation in STARS during the Fall/Winter 2023-2024 (September-April), the declaration form will open on June 1, 2023 and close on July 3, 2023.

This unique program links senior secondary school students to Faculty of Mathematics and Science mentors from various scientific disciplines.
The Brock University Science Mentorship Program
Initially introduced in 1994, the program is designed for students who are highly interested in science, demonstrate significant scientific curiosity and are capable of working independently. The Brock University Science Mentorship Program offers the opportunity to pursue a real-life scientific investigation under the supervision of a faculty or staff member in a university laboratory environment.
Secondary school science and co-op teachers from across Niagara annually encourage and nominate gifted students to participate in this program. Applications are received in the spring with placements commencing the following fall semester of the secondary school year. Students are matched with mentors who are conducting research in subject areas that are of interest to the student. The supervising secondary school teacher maintains a continual dialogue with the student and periodically meets with the mentor. The primary goal of this program is to encourage these mentored students to consider a career in the sciences. This one-on-one commitment by Brock Faculty of Mathematics and Science faculty and staff is truly an exceptional opportunity.

Program Overview
MAY/JUNE
Each student, with their secondary school teacher, will have their initial meeting with their mentor to:
- discuss and select possible research question(s) for investigation
- establish mentor-designated expectations for student acquisition of background knowledge and laboratory skills prerequisite to the investigation, and
- detail the necessary course of background reading.
SEPTEMBER
- WHMIS Training: Attend a course on WHMIS training at the University.
- Brock Library Orientation and Electronic Search System Seminars: Attend two library seminars presented by University Library personnel; the first includes information about the learning resources that the Library has to offer and the second concentrates on how to conduct electronic searches including the employment of Science databases. Students are then given library borrowing privileges congruent to those granted to university students. In addition, Library personnel are available to assist Mentorship students at any time during normal operating hours.
OCTOBER
- Mentorship Orientation Event: This event is the first of two presentations to be delivered by Mentorship students to their Brock mentors, fellow proteges, teachers, participating Brock graduate students and parents. Proteges are required to prepare and present a two-minute PowerPoint summary of what their research project will entail.
FEBRUARY
- Mentorship Symposium Event: Final protege research findings are rendered to the same invited audience as the Orientation event in October. The symposium is designed to mirror the format used at professional science conferences; a twenty-minute presentation followed by a ten-minute question and answer period. Teachers are invited to bring prospective Mentorship candidates to the Symposium.
Note: The September training sessions, October Mentorship Orientation and the
February Mentorship Symposium are normally held during the third week of each of those months.
Program Expectations
During the Mentorship Program semester (September through February), selected students are expected to devote at least two hours per day to:
- Carry out their investigation and data analysis
- Complete a Protege Journal every two weeks
- Maintain a dated lab notebook and log which will be checked regularly by the supervising teacher
- Complete a written report and project presentation at the Mentorship Symposium held in February
