Dr. Andrea Reisch Toepell Memorial Scholarship
OneApp Application Required
Value: $935*. Awarded annually to a student entering the Public Health that has demonstrated academic achievement. The successful recipient must also demonstrate financial need and meet Ontario residency requirements.

This award honours the life of Dr. Andrea Reisch Toepell.  In the summer of 2004, the Department of Health Sciences and the Brock University community lost a valued colleague and a dear friend. Professor Andréa Reisch Toepell died of cancer on July 9th. For those who knew her, Andrea's constant kindness, pervasive optimism and unrelenting enthusiasm for life will always serve as a source of hope and inspiration. Dr. Andréa Toepell was hired by Brock University in July 1995 as the first probationary appointment in the Department of Health Sciences (formerly Health Studies).

Her research in the area of heart health, women's health and HIV/AIDS had a particularly important impact on the Niagara and Hamilton-Wentworth community. Her policy research in the area of safe sex, HIV/AIDS education, women's health and correctional institutional protocols were an important contribution to the health profession. Teaching was a most valued part of her professional career. Andréa's commitment to her students within the classroom spilled into professional development and educational leadership. Despite deteriorating health issues, Andréa maintained her scholarship profile, and one year before her death she earned promotion and tenure. Andrea's passion for life extended into every venue, and in a pattern familiar to female academics, she successfully balanced all the demands of motherhood, family, and academic success. Andréa's colleagues at Brock remember her with affection and respect; she was a colleague who exemplified a gracious and generous spirit.

In a context where 'high impact' is far too often used as a measure of publication excellence alone, Dr. Andréa Toepell's legacy was truly one of 'high impact', who excelled in the quality of human relationships as they extended both within and outside her academic community.
