Brock Aboriginal Achievement Award
Separate Application Required

Value: A Certificate.  The Aboriginal Achievement Award given to two Brock University students (one undergraduate, one graduate) with a holistic excellence of involvement. The recipient of the honour will be a student with:

-a high level of academic achievement
-a high level of community activity
-high level of Brock involvement

Andrew Puim Memorial Bursary

Value: 300*. To be awarded to a varsity athlete. Preference will be first to a men's soccer player; if there is no eligible men's player then the award can be awarded to a female soccer player. If there are no eligible soccer players then the award can be awarded to any varsity athlete at Brock University. The successful applicant must have a minimum average of 70%, demonstrate financial need and meet Ontario residency requirements.

Board of Trustees Spirit of Brock Medal
Separate Application Required 

Value: Gold Medal. The Brock University Board of Trustees has provided the Board of Trustees Spirit of Brock Medal for graduating students who best exemplify Sir Isaac Brock's spirit. The Chair of the Board of Trustees or designate will present the medals at convocation ceremonies. Students must fill out an application found on the Brock University Student Award Website, and deliver it to the Student Awards office by the deadline below.

For Spring convocation, students who receive this Medal must be from the graduating class, one undergraduate from each of the Faculties of Applied Health Sciences, Goodman School of Business, Education, Humanities, Mathematics and Science, and Social Sciences. Also at Spring convocation, a graduate level award will be made each of the faculties of Applied Health Sciences, Goodman School of Business, Education, Humanities, Mathematics and Science, and Social Sciences.

During Fall Convocation only one student is selected at the undergraduate and one at the graduate level. Students who exemplify any one or more of the following qualities can be recommended:

- Leadership
- Courage
- Innovation
- Inspiration
- Community Involvement

Applications must be received by:
SPRING Convocation: First Friday in May (May 3, 2013)

Value: $500*. Awarded to a full- or part-time student, who has completed at least ten credits at Brock University with a minimum B average, and who has made a meaningful contribution to extracurricular life in the Brock community. Dallas Beaton Award
No Application Required
Value: Varies. Awarded annually at the Athletic Banquet to a varsity athlete that exemplifies the perseverance and dedication of Dallas' time at Brock as a varsity athlete, leader and inspiration to those in the Brock community. The student must be in good academic standing (min. 70% previous sessional average), a varsity athlete and be involved in Brock athletics community outreach programs.

Students are nominated through the Brock University Athletic Council Executive and selected by the Dallas Beaton Awards Committee.

Dean's Honours List
No Application Required
Value: Certificate. Students are placed on The Deans' Honours List if they have completed 5 credits with an average of 79.5 percent on those credits. The student will be considered for the Dean's Honours List recognition when the 5, 10, 15 and 20 credit level is surpassed. All credits within the milestone must be completed at Brock (ie no transfer courses). Only undergraduate degree credits are used in the calculation of the milestone.

Students named to the Deans' Honour List may have their name and program published in connections with this award.

Henley Honda Athletics Award

Value: Varies. Awarded to either an entering or current Brock University Athlete.

For students entering Brock University the award is for students entering any program of study. Selection is based on a recommendation from the Director of Athletics and the head coach of a varsity athletic team. Students must have a minimum 80% admission average, must enroll in at least 3.0 credits at Brock University in the Fall/Winter session, and be named to the final roster of a varsity sports team. This award is in addition to any other awards you have been offered.

For students who are currently Brock University Athletes the award is awarded annually to members in good standing of a varsity team who have achieved a minimum Fall/Winter sessional average of 70 percent. Candidates must be returning student athletes who have completed a minimum of 3 credits in the previous academic year. The value of the award will be established annually but may not exceed the maximum established by the OUA (currently $3,500).

Library Research Award
Separate Application Required
Value: $500. Awarded annually to an undergraduate student who has utilized library resources. Selection of the recipient will be made through the submission of a 500-750 word essay describing how you found and used library resources for any paper written for a Brock University course.

The winner will be selected based on how well the searching process was described, a description of the sources used, and evidence of learning. Selection will be based on recommendation from the Library Award Research Committee.

The essay must be accompanied by a copy of the paper and an application form. Applications can be found online at: www.library.brocku.ca/researchaward.php or in person at the Research Help Desk (2nd Floor, Library).

The deadline for entry is: April 15th of each year and they should be submitted to the James A. Gibson Library directly.

Nitsopoulos Family Entrepreneurial Award
Separate Application Required
Value: Up to $10,000. Applicants can be students who are eligible to graduate or graduates from any field of study at Brock. Graduates are eligible for up to two years from the time of graduation.

Initial application requires the applicant(s) to submit a business plan to establish a business in the Niagara Region and make a presentation to a review committee established by the Dean of the Goodman School of Business comprised of members of the Goodman School of Business Advisory Council and one member of the Nitsopoulos family. Applicants may also present their business plan in partnership so long as one of the applicants is a graduate of Brock University. A business plan will be selected and as a next step, the applicant(s) will be required to meet with a mentor representing the Goodman School of Business to fine-tune the business plan and develop a marketing plan. The third step could require the candidate(s) to submit a financing proposal that identifies how the award funds would be spent and how other business expenses would be covered. Once the committee is satisfied the commitment is genuine and the plans are marketable, the candidate(s) will be invited to submit expenditures for reimbursement up to $10,000.

The award will be made on these terms by the Brock University Senate Committee on Undergraduate Student Affairs, based on the recommendation of the Award Review Committee as described in the terms above.

Ontario First Generation Bursary

Value: $1,000. The Government of Ontario has allocated funds to create a bursary fund for students who are the first in their family to attend a university or college. A student in any year of study is eligible, pending they are studying full time in the Fall/Winter session and are Residents of Ontario.

By applying for the Ontario First Generation Bursary students are confirming that, they are the first generation in their family to participate in postsecondary studies and declare that their parents did not attend post secondary studies full-time or part-time, in or outside Canada, at any time or in any program.

The funds will be credited to students tuition account and will directly reduce the amount they owe for tuition and other fees.

Niagara Regional Development Council Scholarship

Awarded to a student who will be entering fourth year and is planning to write an honours thesis or major paper dealing with economic development and/or regional planning in the Niagara area. To be considered for the award the student must submit a plan of research including comments from the students' supervisor.

Nip O'Hearn Hockey Award
No Application Required
Value: $3,500.  Awarded to a student who is a member of the men's varsity hockey and shows dedication and excellence in the sport. The recipient must have a minimum 80% average if they are an entering student and 70% average, if they are a returning student.

Donor: Friends of Nip O'Hearn and the Friends of Brock University Men's Hockey Alumni. Nip O'Hearn is a longtime supporter of amateur sport in the Niagara Region and has been an important staff member for the Brock Men's Hockey team. Nip is an inductee in the St. Catharines Sports Hall of Fame and continually shows his dedication to athletes, hockey, Brock University and the community at large.

Student International Mobility Award
No Application Required
Value: $500/term. Brock provides a travel award of, minimum $1,000, to students registered full-time for two academic terms or more in an approved Student International Mobility program. Students registered for one academic term in an approved Student International Mobility program will receive minimum financial support in the amount of $500. Students participating in Study Abroad Programs whose duration is less than one academic term will receive $250, subject to budget approval. Students in approved graduate student international mobility programs will also be considered for this award.

Students may eligible for additional financial support from bursary programs offered at the university, where there is demonstrable financial need.

The Office of International Services will forward the names of all eligible recipients to Student Awards and Financial Aid for disbursement of the award.

President's Surgite Award
Value: $1,000. The President's Surgite Award is intended to recognize those students who have been outstanding in one or more of the following areas:

· Demonstrated exemplary leadership in a student club, organization, association or team.
· Did something exceptional that helped to advance Brock's academic reputation.
· Made a significant contribution to student life at Brock.
· Provided a valuable service to Brock or the broader community.
 
The President's Surgite Award will be awarded to ten recipients annually and will include a Certificate of Recognition. 7 Awards will be presented to Undergraduate Students and 3 Awards will be presented Graduate students.  A student can only win a Surgite Award once.  Students must have a minimum of 10.0 credits and should only include involvement while they have been studying at Brock.

Student Access Guarantee Bursary

Brock is required to automatically provide the tuition and book shortfall amount to OSAP applicants.
The “tuition/book shortfall” is defined as a student’s remaining financial need, after receipt of available OSAP assistance, which is due to tuition and compulsory ancillary fees above $4,912/year ($5,810 for co-op programs) and/or book, equipment and supply costs above $1,046/year. All figures for the 2010-2011 academic year.
Institutions will be required to automatically provide tuition/book shortfall assistance to their students in first-entry programs, except where income has not been verified by OSAP for the student’s contributing individual.
For students attending a two-term academic year, tuition/book shortfall aid must be delivered by the end of the first month of the student’s second term. For a typical Fall/Winter study period, this means that tuition/book shortfall payments must be issued by February 1st.

This award honours the life of Dr. Andrea Reisch Toepell. In the summer of 2004, the Department of Community Health Sciences and the Brock University community lost a valued colleague and a dear friend. Professor Andrea Reisch Toepell died of cancer on July 9th. For those who knew her, Andrea's constant kindness, pervasive optimism and unrelenting enthusiasm for life will always serve as a source of hope and inspiration. Dr. Andrea Toepell was hired by Brock University in July 1995 as the first probationary appointment in the Department of Community Health Sciences (formerly Health Studies). Her research in the area of heart health, women's health and HIV/AIDS had a particularly important impact on the Niagara and Hamilton-Wentworth community. Her policy research in the area of safe sex, HIV/AIDS education, women's health and correctional institutional protocols were an important contribution to the health profession. Teaching was a most valued part of her professional career.
