HOT TALKS!
The Truth About Art Theft

Thursday, February 4, 7 pm

On August 21, 1911 an Italian carpenter named Vincenzo Peruggia pulled the Mona Lisa off the wall of the Louvre. On March 18th, 1990 two thieves dressed in police uniforms ransacked the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston plucking a Vermeer and twelve other treasures. In 2003 when Saddam Hussein fell from power, a group of Iraqi citizens looted the Iraq National Museum. Edvard Munch's painting The Scream has been stolen twice. These are just a few examples of many art thefts in the world, some never solved. Join in a provocative evening of discussion on art theft with specialists in the field who will explore topics such as: Who steals art? Why? How do museums, galleries, police and government agencies get these treasures back?

Participants:
Simon Houpt, author of Museum of the Missing and arts and culture columnist for The Globe and Mail
Robert Marentette, Director of Security, Art Gallery of Hamilton
Graham P. Ospreay, Forensic Document Examiner and Forgery Analyst

Moderator:
Shirley Madill, Director, Rodman Hall Art Centre

Admission: $8/Members, $10/General, Free/Students

The Main Event

Friday, April 23, 8 - 11 pm

The art comes down, the ring goes up!

Getting you ready for Graeme Patterson's Grudge Match, premiering this May at Rodman Hall, we're putting artists and curators in the ring. Everything you know and love about wrestling (think pile drivers, superslams, DDTs, and foam fingers) collides with contemporary art, right in the gallery. Featuring a roster of wrestlers you won't believe until you see it, including Graeme Patterson vs. Duncan MacDonald, plus David Fancy wielding the megaphone and fan-favourite Derek Knight as referee, this is one royal art rumble you can't miss.

If you're an artist or curator itching to get in the ring, contact Marcie at 905.688.5550, ext. 5804 or
marcie.bronson@brocku.ca.

Admission: $ 20/Members, $25/General
