Reporting to the Residence Life Coordinator – Student Engagement & Leadership, the Residence Community Service Learning Leader is expected to promote community service learning and volunteerism throughout the residence community and assist in promoting a culture of service and involvement in our local community. The Residence Community Service Learning Leader acts as a liaison and link between residence students and community-based organizations to maximize the benefits of service learning to local organizations and to enhance student learning in a meaningful way outside the classroom.
 
ROLE:
  • To provide assistance with the design and implementation of the Res Cares program across all campus residences in conjunction with staff from Student Life and Community Experience
  • To provide support to residence initiatives integrating service learning and volunteerism
  • To act as a resource for Residence Life Staff and Residence Action Council members in the areas of civic engagement, volunteerism and community service learning
  • To be aware of service learning-related initiatives in the greater campus community and promote these to residence students
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Meet weekly/bi-weekly with the Residence Life Coordinator - Student Engagement & Leadership
  • Attend all training and development (including training on how to be a site leader for service learning activities in the community as well as how to facilitate reflection activities for service learning programs)
  • Design displays for residence buildings on the topic of community service learning, volunteerism and the Residence Community Service Learning Leader role
  • Attend meetings with Residence Dons, the Residence Action Council (and the Community Initiatives & Recognition Committee), or Living Learning Communities and their Peer Mentors as necessary to educate on the topic of service learning and to promote related initiatives
  • Give updates at Residence Life Staff meetings
  • Facilitate an on-line community based on service learning and volunteerism to advertise and keep students engaged in the topic
  • Coordinate and facilitate residence students working with community-based organizations in a service learning or volunteer capacity as part of the Res Cares program with a local community organization(s) a minimum of twice per month
  • Assist in the coordination of larger Res Cares Days of Service once per semester
  • Maintain positive, professional relationships with community organizations and work to develop existing relationships while also growing new ones
  • Liaise and provide support as necessary to Student Life & Community Experience service learning initiatives (including Brock Cares Day of Service) and promote these to residence students
  • Role model to student participants how to be a flexible, effective leader and represent Brock University in a positive, professional manner at all times
  • Provide information to media sources as directed to educate the campus and local community on successful residence service learning and volunteerism-related initiatives
  • Maintain records of activities and gather information that can be used to gather the impact of service learning on the local community and on residence students (event sign-in sheets, community organization information, reflection and feedback from student participants, semester-end reports)
  • Assist with the recruitment and training of the Residence Community Service Learning Leader for the following year

“Community Service-learning is a form of experiential education in which students engage in structured activities that are intentionally designed to enhance student learning and civic responsibility, while addressing community needs. Evaluated reflection following the community service is integral to service-learning as it provides an opportunity to critically reflect on the meaning of the service experience. Community Service-learning can occur in the context of an academic program or can be co-curricular."

CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT:
The Residence Community Service Learning Leader must:
  • be legally eligible for employment.
  • be enrolled as a full-time student (at least 3 full credits) while holding this position.
  • applicants with experience living in a Post Secondary residence setting will be given preference during the selection process. 
REMUNERATION:  This position is paid a rate of $11 per hour.
 
TERM OF APPOINTMENT:
The term of appointment is for the period beginning September 4, 2014 and ending April 26, 2015. This position requires non-traditional hours (many evenings and weekends) and typically between 8-10 hours per week.
