Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (Honours): Admission Criteria

Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (Honours): Admission Criteria

Overview of Program
Graduates of the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (Honours) program will have a comprehensive understanding of the issues and trends in early care and education for children from birth to 8 years old and be well prepared for the field of care and education for young children. This program on its own will not provide graduates with an Ontario Teacher Certificate. Rather, graduates of the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (Honours) program are expected to take on positions that require a strong foundation in early care and education, or apply to one-year teacher education programs that lead to an Ontario Teaching Certificate (see Primary/Junior division information at http://www.brocku.ca/registrar/teacher-education/admission-criteria).

Minimum Credentials for Admission
  • A COMPLETED Ontario (or equivalent) two-year Early Childhood Education Diploma (ECE) with a grade of ‘B’ (normally a calculated average of no less than 75% based on all credits completed within the ECE diploma program, excluding practicum grades).
  • At the time of application the Ontario College of Early Childhood Educators Public Register must show a status of either (1) “current member”  OR, (2) evidence that educational qualifications are being assessed (applicants admitted during this assessment period will be admitted conditionally subject to receiving “current member” status prior to the start of classes) . Evidence that you are in the process of applying would be an acknowledgement email or letter issued from the Ontario College of Early Childhood Educators.
  • Any additional education credentials submitted as part of the application will be assessed by the Admissions Office and taken into consideration.
**Applicants who are not currently registered with the Ontario College of Early Childhood Educators and who were educated outside the Ontario college system, including out of province, U.S. and internationally educated individuals should contact the College directly for information regarding registration with the College. Brock University does not determine equivalency for out of province/U.S/international ECE credentials.

Transfer Credit Guidelines
Applicants who hold the ECE and either (1) current registration with the Ontario College of Early Childhood Educators OR (2) evidence that educational qualifications are being assessed by the Ontario College of Early Childhood Educators will automatically receive a minimum of 7.0 credits toward the four-year, 20-credit Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (Honours).

Applicants who present additional post-secondary credentials beyond the ECE diploma may be assessed for further transfer credit up to a maximum of 10.0 credits.
