The Smart Start program is unique to Brock University ensuring that our first year students have a great transition to university life! Smart Start, Students Marking a Realistic Transition, is offered through a summer orientation program hosted by current students and the Brock Community.   It is the ultimate way to become a Brock Student before the start of the September school year.

When?
 
For the 2012 program, Smart Start will begin on Monday June 25, 2012 and finish on Friday August 10.   There is also three Saturday dates that you may choose from as well: July 7, July 14 or July 21. We encourage you to book with your friends, guests and parents early to ensure a spot!  The day will be filled with information, presentations, activities and most importantly fun!

The fee for Smart Start is $45 for students and $15 for guests. The fee covers program materials, parking, lunch and refreshments. For your convenience, you may pay online when you register for the program. You may also pay when you arrive for your day by debit, credit, cash or cheque.

 Where?
 
We will open the doors to the Walker Complex for you each morning of the program at 7:45 am so that you have plenty of time to check-in before our Welcome Session which begins at 8:35 am in Academic South 204.  You will be finished and  on your way home with everything you need to know and all your questions answered by 4:00 pm the same day.
 
Free parking is available for Smart Start participants and guests in Lot D when you show your Letter of Acceptance. You will enter the campus by the way of St. David’s Road and follow the parking signs to Lot D. The Red Shirts (Staff) will be waiting for you and will direct you to the Registration Area in the Walker Complex. Each summer, over 5000 students, parents and guests attend the Smart Start program. It is a great way to “jump” into university life and be familiar with Brock and the Brock Community.
 
The Smart Start Team will be with you in the Computer Commons (also known as the “Fish Bowl”) to assist with course registration and check your courses to make sure that they meet your program requirements

We encourage you to register for your courses before attending the program. Course registration begins in mid-June and you will be able to view the first selection of courses, seminars, labs and tutorials.  
 
Make sure you let us know if you are living in residence, if you are  living off campus, or if you will be commuting, having a part time job, plan to participate in varsity sports or plan to get involved in the Brock community so that we can try to make the best class schedule possible for you.

The Smart Start program is a great way to meet other students who will be in your major, your program of study and your first year courses.   You will be able to meet other first-year students who are living on campus and in your residence as well as students who will be living in the local region.
 
92.2% knew what to expect socially
 
You will also be able to purchase an Access Gold Card during your Smart Start day which will allow you to participate in most Orientation Events during the first week of September. Remember Access Gold is available through the Student Union (BUSU) and sold only at Smart Start (limited quantities).

You may also purchase a Zone Membership to keep yourself active and involved within the athletic and recreational communities.  
 
If you have dietary concerns you may speak directly with our Dining Services staff on campus who will be available during the day.
 
All paid students and guests will be having lunch in the Marketplace which features a wide variety of foods. You will select a meal from one of the following areas: the Rotisserie, Chef’s Specials, The Grill, Oven Creations (Gourmet Pizza), The Deli (Sandwiches and Paninis) and The 360 degree Mongolian Grill.

We encourage all students with a diagnosed disability to take advantage of the opportunity to meet with a Disabilities Specialist during the afternoon of their Smart Start scheduled day. All appointments are private and confidential.
 
You may request a meeting with a Disabilities Specialist when you register online. Services for Students with Disabilities will be automatically notified of your appointment once you submit the completed registration form. During the afternoon of your Smart Start Orientation, you will meet with a case manager from Services for Students Disabilities to review your accessibility needs, discuss your assistive technology needs, and talk about course selection.
