Course Requirements & Timetables

 

Course Pre-requisites and Required Documents
General Requirements:
  • The eligibility of each candidate will be determined by the Faculty of Education and in accordance with the requirements of Regulation 176/10 of the Ontario College of Teachers Act.
  • The Ontario College of Teachers requires that all prerequisite qualifications (e.g. Part II if registered in a Part III course) are verified on your Certificate of Qualification, regardless of whether you completed the prerequisite at Brock or another institution.
  • The Ontario College of Teachers will not permit retroactive recommendation.
  • The Office of the Registrar reserves the right to withdraw any applicant who submits documentation and is then found to be uncertified or unqualified.
     
Course Specific Pre-Requisites:
  • One-Session and Three-Session Qualifications
     
    Part I
    • must hold or be deemed to hold a valid Ontario College of Teachers Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification. A Letter of Eligibility does not satisfy this admission requirement unless accompanied by an "Entry Letter” issued by the Ontario College of Teachers
    • in the case of a Part 1 qualification in Primary Education, Junior Education or Intermediate Education, the applicant must have an entry on their Certificate that shows an area of concentration for the corresponding division
    • Candidates showing Technological Studies only i.e. no general studies on their Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification may take the following Brock additional qualifications only:  Cooperative Education, English as a Second Language, Guidance, Integration of Information and Computer Technology in Instruction, Reading,Special Education and Visual Arts
       
    Part II
    • must hold a Certificate of qualification showing successful completion of Part I.
    • provide evidence of at least one year (194 days) of successful teaching experience certified by the appropriate supervisory officer or evidence of at least one year of successful teaching experience  certified by the appropriate supervisory officer (Not your Principal). Use the Certification of Teaching Experiences form. This teaching experience must be completed prior to the commencement of the course.
       
    Part III
    • must hold a Certificate of qualification showing successful completion of Part II
    • provide evidence of at least two years (388 days) of successful teaching experience, including at least one year of experience in the subject for which the specialization is sought, as certified by the appropriate supervisory officer, (Not your Principal). Use the Certification of Teaching Experiences form. This teaching experience must be completed prior to the commencement of the course


  • Additional Basic Qualifications (Primary, Junior, Intermediate and Senior Divisions)
     
    PRIMARY AND JUNIOR DIVISION
    • must hold or be deemed to hold a valid Ontario College of Teachers Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification. A Letter of Eligibility does not satisfy this admission requirement unless accompanied by an "Entry Letter" issued by the Ontario College of Teachers.
    • provide evidence of an acceptable university degree
       
    INTERMEDIATE DIVISION
    • must hold or be deemed to hold a valid Ontario College of Teachers Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification. A Letter of Eligibility does not satisfy this admission requirement unless accompanied by an "Entry Letter" issued by the Ontario College of Teachers
    • provide evidence of an acceptable university degree in the form of an official transcript
    • the official transcript must show successful completion of a minimum of two full university credits in the teaching option for the Intermediate Division except in the case of Dramatic Arts which does not require credits in the teaching option
       
    SENIOR DIVISION
    • must hold or be deemed to hold a valid Ontario College of Teachers Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification. A Letter of Eligibility does not satisfy this admission requirement unless accompanied by an "Entry Letter" issued by the Ontario College of Teachers
    • provide proof of an acceptable university degree in the form of an official transcript
    • the official transcript must show successful completion of a minimum of five full university credits in the teaching option for the Senior Division.
    • if the senior division is already showing on the Certificate of Qualification, the official transcript must show three full credits in the teaching option.


  • Honour Specialist Qualification
    • must hold or be deemed to hold a valid Ontario College of Teachers Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification. A Letter of Eligibility does not satisfy this admission requirement
    • hold qualifications in one of: The Primary Division, Junior Division, Intermediate Division in general studies or the Senior Division in general studies
    • provide official transcripts of all university work to show the applicant holds an acceptable post-secondary degree from an Ontario University or equivalent in a program:
      1. that requires four years of university study to a total of at least 20 full university courses. Courses required for teaching certification or additional teaching qualifications cannot be used for this requirement
      2. in which the candidate has obtained at least second class standing or equivalent (70%) in at least nine full university courses in the subject in which the candidate seeks an Honour Specialist qualification
    • submit evidence of at least two years (388 days) of successful teaching experience, including at least one year of experience in the subject in which the Honour Specialist qualification is sought, certified by the appropriate supervisory officer. Use the Certification of Teaching Experiences form. This teaching experience must be completed prior to the commencement of the course.

      NOTE: For the Honour Specialist in General Science the nine full credits must come from Biology, Chemistry and Physics with a minimum of one full credit from each subject.
      Applicants should be aware that the outcome of our Academic Assessments for Honour Specialist Qualifications may differ from assessments conducted by OSSTF, QECO and the Ontario College of Teachers.


  • Technological Studies Qualifications and Technological Studies Honour Specialist
     
    TECHNOLOGICAL STUDIES QUALIFICATION
    • must submit an Ontario Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification indicating initial qualifications at the intermediate and senior divisions in Technological Studies.
    • for applicants whose Ontario Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification does not indicate intermediate and senior divisions in Technological Studies, evidence of at least five years of wage-earning experience related to the subject for which qualification is sought. (Pertinent education can substitute for some wage-earning experience.)
       
    TECHNOLOGICAL STUDIES HONOUR SPECIALIST
    • must hold or be deemed to hold a valid Ontario College of Teachers Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate Qualification showing: qualifications in at least three of the subjects listed in schedule B including at least one at both the basic and advanced level; OR qualifications in at least four of the subjects listed in schedule B at the basic level and an entry indicating the Specialist (Part III) qualification in one of the subjects listed in schedule D.
    • the following AQs are deemed equivalent to one entry for a qualification in grades 9 and 10 in a technological subject listed in schedule B: Science & Technology 7&8; part 1 of any of the following 3-part specialist - Co-operative Education, Design & Technology, English as a Second Language, Guidance & Career Education, Integration of Info. & Computer Technology in Instruction, Special Education.
    • submit evidence of at least two years (388 days) of successful teaching experience, including at least one year of experience in Technological Studies, certified by the appropriate supervisory officer. Use the Certification of Teaching Experiences form. This teaching experience must be completed prior to the commencement of the course.
    • hold a Secondary School Honours Graduation Diploma (Grade 13) or have successfully completed the equivalent of one year's full-time study in a program in respect of which a Secondary School Graduation Diploma or its equivalent is required for admission (e.g. five full credits at the university level or successful completion of at least one year of a college diploma program). Courses credited towards teaching certification or additional teaching qualifications cannot be used for this requirement.

How to Apply for Pre-approval for All Honours Specialist Courses

Before registering on the web for any Honour Specialist qualification including the Honour Specialist in Technology, it will be necessary to submit the required documentation as outlined in Course Pre-requisites and Required Documents. In most cases, this will include official transcript(s) and a Certification of Teaching Experiences form.
