Candidates learn CPR and develop their fitness with a timed 400m swim. Successful completion of Bronze Star is not a requirement, but allows a person of any age to then take Bronze Medallion.
Prerequisite: none; Canadian Swim Patrol (Rookie/Ranger/Star) experience is recommended
Bronze Medallion
The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Medallion Award teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education—judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness. Rescuers learn tows and carries and defence and release methods in preparation for rescues of conscious and unconscious victims. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed 500m swim.
Prerequisites: 13 years of age or Bronze Star certification
Required Reference Material: Canadian Lifesaving Manual
Bronze Cross
Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguard and Instructor certification. Includes a timed 600m swim.
Prerequisites: Bronze Medallion; Emergency First Aid or Standard First Aid*
Required Reference Material: Canadian Lifesaving Manual
Bronze Cross Recertification
To maintain a "current" certification, award holders recertify within 2 years by successfully retaking the practical examination. A new certification card is issued to successful candidates after each re-examination. A current Bronze Cross (and 16 yrs. of age) is required to be an Assistant Lifeguard in Ontario. A Bronze Cross certification need not be current to take NLS or the Swimming Instructor courses.
Prerequisite: Participant must bring to course proof of prior Bronze Cross certification and additional personal identification.
*Only Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross, St. John Ambulance, or Canadian Ski Patrol are acceptable first aid certification providers for the purposes of meeting the requirements of the Lifesaving Society's leadership courses.
