First Aid & AED

All first aid courses are provided by the Lifesaving Society of Ontario.

Standard First Aid with CPR C and Anaphylaxis Rescuer

Standard First Aid provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. Standard First Aid incorporates all the content of Emergency First Aid. Therefore, it is not necessary to take any other course as a pre-requisite. This course is designed for those who require an in-depth understanding of first aid including: legal implications of first aid treatment, spinal injuries, heat or cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, abdominal and chest injuries, burns, and medical emergencies. CPR-C covers all aspects of CPR skills and theory for adults, children, and infants. Standard First Aid is required as a prerequisite for National Lifeguard (NLS).

Anaphylaxis Rescuer: Learn prevention, risk management, recognition and treatment for anaphylaxis, including how to use an auto-injector (EpiPen or Twinject). Anaphylaxis Rescuer certification is included with Standard First Aid courses at Brock.

Recertification—Standard First Aid with CPR C and Anaphylaxis Rescuer

Holders of Standard First Aid (SFA) certificates from other agencies may not recertify their certificate at a Lifesaving Society (LSS) recertification course. They may recertify only with the original certifying agency or take the LSS SFA full course (dates & times listed above).

Standard First Aid recertification procedure: SFA award holders may recertify their LSS certification only once on a certification course. Subsequently, award holders must repeat the full course. Thereafter, individuals may renew by alternating recertifications and original courses.

Emergency First Aid with CPR B

For those who want a general knowledge of first aid principles and the emergency treatment of injuries. Skills include: victim assessment, rescue breathing, choking, and what to do for external bleeding, heart attack, and stroke. CPR B certification is incorporated within Emergency First Aid and is targetted toward parents, grandparents, babysitters, or childcare workers, and teaches the CPR and choking procedures for adults and children. Please note: for those that are preparing for their NLS (National Lifeguard), you will need to take Standard First Aid instead. Prerequisite: None.

First Aid Update

An update session for instructors to review and to practice the revised CPR protocols – including AED requirements which are being integrated into CPR, Emergency First Aid, and Standard First Aid certifications. You must be a Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor or Lifesaving Society Instructor award holder to register.

Red Cross Sport First Aid

You will receive certification (Sport First Aid, Standard First Aid and CPR) that meets WSIB standards, a Red Cross Vital Link manual and a Sport First Aid manual. Instructed by certified athletic therapists. Certification is current for 3 years.

Automated External Defibrillation (AED)

Builds on the skills learned in CPR and first aid courses. AED provides knowledge of how the heart works and what goes wrong when defibrillation is required. Prerequisite: any LSS CPR or First Aid certification.

Airway Management

Airway Management provides knowledge on the use of oxygen, suction devices, oropharyngeal airways and mask/bag valves mask (BVM). Prerequisite: CPR-A or higher certification.
