Brock University Library's Collection Development Program is designed to direct and manage the growth of library resources according to specific objectives defined by the professional library staff and the University faculty.
This Collection Development Policy serves as a written guide for the selection, acquisition and maintenance of library materials. The general purposes of the Policy are to:
i) shape a strong collection by ensuring that publications relate to the curriculum and faculty research activities
ii) provide information that may be used in the preparation of OCGS applications
iii) present the Library's collection-building and selection policy objectives to the University faculty, students, staff, and administrators and trustees and to the off-campus community. Acquaint new faculty and staff to the Library's collection policies
iv) provide the basis for coordinated collection development and resource sharing agreements with other institutions.
II. General Policy Guidelines
a. Selection Responsibilities
The selection of materials to be added to the Library's collection is performed by liaison librarians in consultation with faculty library representatives and other members of the academic departments. Requests from other faculty, staff, and students are evaluated according to established criteria.
b. Selection Criteria - Books
The following criteria will be considered as appropriate when selecting titles for acquisition:
Single Copies: To prevent serious dilution of library resources, the usual procedure is to purchase only one copy of a title. Multiple copies are purchased only if heavy and continuous use can be demonstrated. High demand materials are generally placed on Reserve.
Replacement: Items are not automatically replaced. Primary criteria are usage, the number of copies in the library, date of publication, and the existence of alternative material in the collection. The most recent edition will be purchased for replacement.
Edition: Newer editions are purchased only if they have been substantially updated or there is an improvement on the previous edition.
Textbooks: Books used as texts are not routinely added to the Library collection, but may be purchased if they meet the standards listed above. Elementary or high school level texts for support of the education curriculum are purchased for the Instructional Resource Centre (IRC).
