There are currently four major Research Foci in the lab:
Behavioural ecology of black flies
We look at a broad range of black fly behaviours including blood-feeding preferences and sugar-feeding preferences. Recent emphasis has been on the effects of honeydew vs. vectar as sugar meals with regards to longevity, fecundity, parasite transmission and flight performance.
Chromosomal systematics of black flies and mosquitoes
The banding patterns of larval salivary gland polytene chromosomes are used to examine both intraspecific and interspecific relationships among black flies and mosquitoes. We are currently the only active lab in Canada studying the cytogenetics of biting flies.
Molecular systematics of biting flies
We examine both intra- and inter-specific relationships using DNA sequence analyses. Recently completed projects have included the mosquitoes of Canada and the tabanids (deer flies and horse flies) of Canada. Genes used routinely in our lab include ITS1, ITS2 and COI. Current PhD students are using molecular techniques to identify Anopheles mosquitoes from Canada and from Ecuador.
Pollination of Umbelliferae by dipterans
A newly funded project will look at the relative importance of dipterans as pollinators in Daucus carota (edible carrot and Queen Anne’s Lace). An MSc studentship opportunity is available for this project. More information is available at here.
