Each program has a limited number of spaces that will be filled, and so it may not be possible to switch programs. If you would like to request a change to your program or teachable subject you should send an email to the Administrative Director at the end of the Fall/Winter session. Information should include your student ID number, the program you are currently in and the change you are requesting. Requests should be received by June 1. In order for the request to be considered the student must have maintained a 70% cumulative overall average. Decisions will be made by the Concurrent Admissions Committee and students will be notified by July 1. Normally, only requests for a change of program are considered after first year. Requests for a change of teachable subject for Junior/Intermediate programs or a second teachable subject for Intermediate/Senior may be considered up to third year.
Students who have replicated the first year of a concurrent program may apply and be admitted to second year if there is space available. To apply students must have an overall average in Year 1 of 70% or higher, their Year 1 program replicates the 5.0 credit concurrent program requirements, and the secondary school English and Mathematics, and for Physical Education programs, the Biology admission requirements are met. A Profile Questionnaire is required. Application forms and the Profile are available on the Concurrent Education web site from April 1 to June 1. The completed documents must be filed in the Concurrent Education Office no later than June 1. Late applications will not be accepted. Students should note that this is a limited enrolment program and admission is not guaranteed by attainment of the minimum requirements.
Normally a student would make that decision after first year or possibly second year. At that stage it is relatively simple to change to another degree program. It is rare for a student to change their mind closer to the end of the program.
Most people complete an undergraduate degree at a university and then complete the Bachelor of Education degree. At Brock, completing one degree followed by the other is referred to as the consecutive route to teaching. Concurrent education programs do not suit all individuals. Some students choose to study the undergraduate degree on a part-time basis and this is not possible in concurrent programs.
Student records are reviewed in May/June when final grades are available for the academic year. Students who have failed to maintain an overall average of 70% in undergraduate courses are notified in writing that they are unable to continue in the Concurrent Education Program at that time. They are advised that they can upgrade and request reinstatement. It is recommended that students in this position should meet with an academic advisor to discuss the process in more detail based on their individual needs. During the upgrading period they are not permitted to take Teacher Education BEd courses. If students manage to successfully meet the mark requirements during the Spring, Summer sessions, then they may request reinstatement for September, and thus continue the concurrent program without interruption. Students may upgrade and request readmission only once.

We recommend an appointment in the first term if you have not attended SMART Start to obtain a personalized plan of your program. Then during your Brock career we want you to ask informed questions after accessing information through the Brock website, this website and the Brock Undergraduate Calendar. We encourage you to plan ahead each year and recommend that if academic advising is needed to assist you that appointments are scheduled between March and June. During July and August we focus on advising new students at SMART Start and solving registration issues. We strongly recommend that concurrent students in the BA and BSc (Honours) Integrated Studies Programs at the Junior/Intermediate level have an annual appointment to make sure they are making the best possible use of the program.
Email is the most common way to reach you but we must use your Brock email address to ensure that information is confidential, secure and transmitted reliably. Occasionally we may communicate with you by telephone. We also have meetings to communicate with specific groups of students. We send you a letter if we need to communicate with you formally, for example, about your status in the program.
These different ways to reach you are meant to offer you as much support and encouragement as possible so you can make the most of your concurrent program.

Your first classroom experience connected with the concurrent education programs occurs in second year and is a requirement for a full-year undergraduate degree course on child and youth development (CHYS 2P15). You participate in a classroom for a half-day a week for a minimum of 18 sessions.
Concurrent students in P/J, J/I and I/S programs complete school placements as a course requirement for CHYS 2P15. This course focuses on learning about child and youth development and so these placements are fulfilled in the elementary school system.
A school placement is generally the term used to refer to an experience in a school required in some undergraduate courses as part of the Bachelor degree to link school culture and theory. Student participation in the classroom is at the discretion of the teacher. Teaching blocks is the term used to refer to the practical experiences in teaching that are supervised in schools associated with the Teacher Education degree leading to a recommendation to the Ontario College of Teachers for an Ontario Certificate of Qualification.
As a concurrent education student, it is your esponsibility to obtain a police records check with vulnerable sector screening for your required participation in field experience placements in CHYS 2P15, EDUC 8P15, EDUC 8P17, EDUC 8P18, EDUC 8P19, EDUC 8P50, MATH 3P91 and ESCI 3P91.You will need to apply for a new police check every year and the police check can be no more than 6 months old at the beginning of your field experience. Concurrent students do not have field experience in their first year, therefore, will not require a police check until the summer prior to 2nd year. The costs associated with the provision of the criminal record check and any appeals are to be borne by the applicant. Terms of study at another institution cannot be accommodated during the Fall/Winter sessions, however students may participate in opportunities during spring/summer sessions.
Yes you can. Brock students must apply for, and be granted, a Letter of Permission (LOP) from the Office of the Registrar before registering at another university. Consult with our office to check that courses you select will fulfill your program requirements as well as meet university standards. Students may request to attend the Hamilton campus for their final year only. The Department of Teacher Education reserves the right to assign Concurrent Education students, in their final year, to either the Hamilton or St. Catharines campus. Students will be given the opportunity to state their campus preference in the year prior to their final year.
Concurrent Education students in the Intermediate/Senior division who have French as their first or second teachable subject must attend the Hamilton campus for the final year of the program.

Yes, by taking Additional Qualification (AQ) course(s) students can add grade levels to their certification after they have completed their concurrent program. These courses are only available to certified teachers through the Centre for Continuing Teacher Education. In order to take the appropriate AQ course students must meet the prerequisites. For example, to take the Senior Basic Curriculum course which would certify a J/I teacher to teach up to grade 12, a student must have 5 credits in a teachable subject. (A second teachable subject with three credits is strongly recommended) Not all subject areas are offered at Brock. Please see our website for more information about AQ courses.
