Biography
Murray Knuttila was appointed to the position of Provost and Vice-President, Academic on July 1, 2009. He comes to Brock from the University of Regina where he held the positions of Associate Vice-President, Academic (2002-09), Dean of Arts (1995-2002), Head of the Department of Sociology and Social Studies (1990-95) and Assistant Dean of Arts (1985-89). Knuttila received his BA honours and MA degrees in sociology from the University of Regina and his PhD from the University of Toronto. He is a highly respected researcher and educator in his field.
Knuttila was the Chair of the Regina Qu’Appelle Regional Health Authority from 2002-2007 and received the University of Regina Alumni Award for Outstanding Public Service in 2007. In 2005 he was awarded a Saskatchewan Centennial Medal. He is also a Member of the Canadian Foundation for Innovation.
Position Profile - Provost and Vice-President, Academic
The Provost and Vice-President, Academic is responsible, in concert with the President, for providing leadership and direction to other members of the University’s senior administrative team, including fellow Vice-Presidents, Associate Vice-Presidents, Deans, University Librarian, University Secretary, and Directors of major administrative units. The Provost is ultimately responsible for all decisions relating to both the research and the academic mandate of the University, and plays a key role in continuing to make Brock a university in which strong undergraduate programs are increasingly complemented by a wide array of graduate programs and by research and innovation across the institution. The Provost works closely with the Vice-President, Research and the seven Deans to expand Brock’s graduate programs and research initiatives.
