Notification of Noise Disruption 573 Glenridge – Friday March 19th at 6:00 a.m.

Please be advised that starting tomorrow Friday March 19th, 2010 contractors from Accel Electric will be coring holes into the ground floor east wall of 573 Glenridge between 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Noise disruptions will be experienced during this time but will be completed by the start of classes at 9:00 a.m.

Notice of Unplanned Disruption Thistle Elevator (outside of Th248 Classroom) Temporarily Out of Service

Please be advised that the Thistle Elevator (outside of classroom Th248) that services the 100 and 200 and 300 levels of Thistle is stuck on the 200 level with the doors open and is temporarily out of service. A service technician has been notified and is en-route to rectify the problem. There is no alternate available at this time.

March 16th Update Notice of Noise & Vibration Disruptions NHBRC Project

Please be advised that main excavation and shoring work for the lower level of the new NHBRC building is anticipated to continue until the end of March. The rock removal has been extended from the original schedule due to the hardness of the material and an increase in the quantity required to be removed. Remaining work is confined to the easterly portion of the site. Noise and vibration disruptions will continue to be experienced in the buildings within close proximity to this area.

Notice of Planned Men’s Washroom Closure Welch Hall 100 Level

Please be advised that starting today Tuesday February 23rd, 2010 contractors from Charter Building Company will begin renovation work on the main floor (100 Level) of Welch Hall. The Men’s washroom will be out of service due to required entrance modification.
This Friday, February 26th the contractor will be cutting concrete block in the walls along the ground floor level. During this work noise will be generated from a concrete cutting saw. Dust will be controlled during the construction work by enclosing the area of work and using water while cutting. The majority of the noise disruption due to concrete cutting is expected to be completed by 5:00 p.m. Friday.
Renovation work will continue and is anticipated to be completed by Monday March 30th. Noise and vibration disruptions will be experienced in the areas within close proximity to the area under construction. Alternate washrooms can be found on the basement level and second floor levels during this renovation period.

2010 Schedule for Monthly Fire Alarm Testing

The Ontario fire code states that buildings fire alarm systems must be tested monthly. This includes all alarms, audible and visible. Facilities Management personnel along with Campus Security and GE security will be conducting these monthly tests on the following dates. During the time of testing it is not necessary to evacuate the building when you hear the alarms. The alarms should only sound for a short period of time during testing, should the alarm ring continuously please treat the alarm as real and evacuate the area as per normal emergency procedures.

  • January 12-15th 2010, between 11:00pm to 7:00am
  • February 8-11th 2010, between 11:00pm to 7:00am
  • March 8-11th 2010, between 11:00pm to 7:00am
  • April 12-15th 2010, between 11:00pm to 7:00am
  • May 10-13th 2010, between 11:00pm to 7:00am
  • June 14-17th 2010, between 11:00pm to 7:00am
  • July 12-15th 2010, between 11:00pm to 7:00am
  • August 9-12th 2010, between 11:00pm to 7:00am

Campus Wide Power Shut Down Friday May 21st 10:00 p.m. to Saturday May 22nd at 10:00 a.m.

To ensure a reliable electrical distribution to the Brock University Campus, Facilities Management is planning a FULL Campus electrical shut down for Friday May 21st 2010. This shut down will take place Friday May 21st, 2010 starting at 10:00 p.m. and will be completed by Saturday May 22nd at 10:00 a.m. This Campus shut down will allow for a much needed second campus electrical feed to sustain the growing University. The energy demand and occupancy is at it’s lowest during the month of May and for this reason the date has been picked for May 21st. Planning of any events especially events that require accommodation of large groups or activities are to be avoided during this time since there will be no power except for critical areas of the Campus during this time. Lab experiments should also be reduced to critical research only. Industry standards require that preventative maintenance on electrical substations be completed in recommended intervals of 12 to 36 months to ensure a reliable electrical distribution system. To complete this we are implementing a 10 year maintenance program to address all fourteen main substations through out the University.

H1N1 Flu Awareness & Preparedness Situation

The Emergency Response Team (ERT) has been activated to provide operational level emergency management of this emerging emergency and is following the University’s Emergency Management Plan and the generic draft Medical Emergency Response Plan. It is meeting weekly. Domenic Maniccia is the lead Facilities Management Director on the ERT. The ERT will advise or inform the University’s Crisis Management Group (CMG) on recommendations impacting one or more of the University’s Divisions, students, and visitors as well as on matters beyond the authority of the ERT. Flu rates continue to decline since the May/June 2009 peak however it is expected that a second wave is very probable in the October period following the end of summer as schools, universities, colleges, workplaces all ramp up along with the traditional start of seasonal flu season.

Activity Announcement - Niagara Health and Bioscience Research Complex

The construction of the NHBRC will commence the week of August 4, 2009 and conclude in 2012. This construction will have significant impact to University Road east of the Plaza Building and south of MacKenzie Chown Complex as this section of road will be rerouted to accommodate the new facility. This will require the relocation of the reserved parking in Lot A and the visitor parking in Lot E. Traffic will be maintained with some delays and re-direction to facilitate the work. Pedestrian traffic around the enclosed construction site will be provided by temporary walkways and road crossings.

Brock University Solid Waste Audit

“The 2008 annual Non Hazardous Waste Audit results indicate that Brock has achieved a landfill diversion rate of 80%. This diversion rate is 20 % higher than the Ministry of Environment’s target of 60% reduction in landfill volume. This achievement was made possible by the combined efforts of everyone within the Brock Community"

Horizon Utilities Helps Business Customers Go Green and Stay in the Black

Over the last year Facilities Management has been investing in energy savings projects to further reduce the University’s energy use and replace aging infrastructure. One of Facilities Management’s projects has been converting T12 florescent lights to more energy efficient T8’s. Facilities Management has taken advantage of the Electricity Retrofit Incentive Program (ERIP) through the University’s local utility (Horizon Utilities) to change over 4,000 T12 lamps. The change over has yielded an average energy savings of 33% saving the University over $40,000 a year coupled with a retrofit incentive of over $12,000 from the ERIP program. All these projects help the University reduce energy use and save money while enabling Facilities Management to retrofit aging infrastructure in a cost efficient way.

Assessment of Plaza Building, has resulted in a LEED® Canada-NC 1.0 Silver rating

Plaza Building green features include:

  • Optimizing energy cost performance of almost 33% better than the Model National Energy Code for Buildings, and energy consumption savings of 43%, through:
    • High thermal efficiency of the boilers
    • High thermal resistance of the walls and roof
    • Double-glazed, argon-filled, low-e coating windows with thermally broken aluminum frames
    • Lowered lighting power density
  • Reducing indoor potable water use by over 60% with dual-flush toilets, low flow urinals and lavatories, and rainwater harvesting
  • Achieving exemplary performance in regional materials at over 30%
  • Providing superior indoor environmental quality for the tenants with construction indoor air quality management, low-emitting materials, indoor chemical control and thermal comfort.

The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) intends to let the world know about Brock University’s achievement by featuring it on their website www.cagbc.org
