You are invited to participate in a study that involves research. The purpose of this study is to determine what influences program choices for Aboriginal students and whether the academic supports currently offered reflect student needs.
As a participant, you will be asked to complete a survey containing some multiple choice questions, as well as some questions where you will have the opportunity to elaborate on your response. Participation will take approximately 15 minutes of your time.
POTENTIAL BENEFITS AND RISKS
A possible benefit of participation include is that you will provide Aboriginal Student Services insight into what services and programs are best suited for the students here at Brock University. As well, your participation in completing this survey may help shape decisions regarding programming or resources for future students. There are no known or anticipated risks associated with participation in this study.
All information you provide is considered confidential; your name will not be included or, in any other way, associated with the data collected in the study. While you will be asked your name at the onset of the survey for verification that you are an Aboriginal Brock student or alumnus, your name and any other identifier will not be linked to your responses. Furthermore, because our interest is in the average responses of the entire group of participants, you will not be identified individually in any way in written reports or presentations of this research.
Data collected during this study will be stored in a password protected file not located on any university network. Data will be kept for 6 months after which time all files will be erased.
Access to any data with any identifiers will be restricted to Jesse Barraza, Retention Programs Coordinator. Upon removal of direct identifiers, analysis will be conducted by Sue Guenther. Jesse Barraza will be responsible for ensuring the security of both the survey and the institutional demographic data.
Participation in this study is voluntary. If you wish, you may decline to answer any questions or participate in any component of the study. Further, you may decide to withdraw from this study at any time and may do so without any penalty or loss of benefits to which you are entitled. Participants can withdraw at any time by emailing Jill Brindle (Jbrindle@brocku.ca ) or Sandra Wong (firstname.lastname@example.org ) and requesting that your responses be removed from the study. The information will be permanently deleted from all files.
PUBLICATION OF RESULTS
Results of this study may be published in professional journals and presented at conferences. Feedback about this study will be available from Jill Brindle, Manager of A-Z Learning Services and Aboriginal Student Services, and Sandra Wong, Aboriginal Academic Support Coordinator (email@example.com 905 688 5550 x 5883). Results will be shared at various Aboriginal Student Services luncheons in Fall 2014. To review results prior to Fall 2014, we anticipate preliminary results to be available through Aboriginal Student Services in March or April 2014.
