Goals of the program
Spinal cord injury (SCI) can have negative effects on physical function as well as health. However, various forms of exercise training have been shown to improve function after SCI, and reduce the risk of diseases associated with inactivity.
Although goals will differ between people, our wheelchair accessible exercise program aims to:
• Improve your cardiovascular health and fitness, and allow you to be more active at home and in the community
• Improve your muscle strength. Our specialized exercise equipment can be used to train the muscles above your injury and the muscles below your injury
• Improve your function and independence. Improved strength and endurance may reduce the amount of assistance you need at home and in the community
• For those who have some walking ability already – we hope to improve your walking speed and endurance
AND…our exercise facility is fun!
We hope to build your confidence and quality of life, as much as your muscles.
