Jennifer Rowsell is a Canada Research Chair in Multiliteracies at Brock University in Canada. Jennifer worked in teacher education at OISE/University of Toronto before taking on a tenure-track post in English Education at Rutgers Graduate School of Education. While at Rutgers Graduate School of Education, Jennifer conducted three research studies. One study was an Australian Research Council funded project with Drs. Sue Nichols, Helen Nixon, and Sophia Rainbird of the University of South Australia on Parents’ Networks of Information about Children’s Literacy and Development and from the research the team published a special journal issue, several refereed journal articles, and a Routledge book entitled, Resourcing Early Learners: New Networks, New Actors. As well, Jennifer conducted a four-year study in a high school in Princeton, New Jersey adopting multimodal approaches to the teaching of English with ninth grade students and from this research Jennifer co-wrote two books with Dr. Kate Pahl of the University of Sheffield entitled, Artifactual Literacies: Every Object Tells a Story (Teachers College Press), and Literacy and Education: Understanding the New Literacy Studies in the Classroom (Sage), Second Edition. During the transition from Rutgers to Brock, Jennifer conducted a two-year study of professional producers of media and digital technologies and co-wrote a book on the study with Mary P. Sheridan of The University of Louisville entitled, Design Literacies (Routledge). From this study and once at Brock University, Jennifer extended the study on professional perspectives on design and multimodality by conducting a two-year study of experts of specific modes such as space, sound, words, film, videogames and she has written a new book entitled Working with Multimodality (Routledge). Presently, Jennifer is conducting with Drs. Ruth McQuirter-Scott, Tiffany Gallagher, Mary Saudelli and Katia Ciampa and Donna Dormans (all Brock University) a SSHRC-funded Insight Development two-year study on digital reading processes and practices that is a multi-sited research project taking place in Canadian schools and schools in Sydney, Australia with Drs. Maureen Walsh of the Australian Catholic University and Alyson Simpson of the University of Sydney and in San Diego, USA with Drs. Diane Lapp and Douglas Fisher of San Diego State University. Jennifer is Co-Editor of Language and Literacy, a Canadian journal of literacy education and on the editorial board for several journals. Also, Jennifer Rowsell has recently co-hosted a SSHRC-funded Aid to Research Workshop with Dr. Julian Sefton-Green entitled, Revisiting Learning Lives: Longitudinal perspectives on literacy education and learning with well-known scholars in the areas of literacy, multimodality, and media education.
