Recently, Drs. Sheila Bennett and Tiffany Gallagher from the Teacher Education Department were the invited guests to the Department of Special Education at the University of Ghent in Ghent, Belgium. The objective of this trip was to conduct a longitudinal follow up of their former graduate students who participated in internships at schools in Niagara.
“It was reassuring to see that even after two years the messages around inclusive practice had stayed with the students,” said Gallagher. “All of them came to meet with us and were excited to spend time discussing the influence their Canadian experience had on them as professionals.”
Their internships, over two years ago, were a part of a large, HRSDC funded international student exchange that focused on advocacy and inclusion. Drs. Bennett and Gallagher also attended meetings with University of Ghent faculty member, Dr. Geert Van Hove and program administrator, Dieter Windels to plan for upcoming grant applications and a letter of agreement to continue to offer exchange experiences for their students.
Dr. Sheila Bennett is a professor and former chair in the Department of Teacher Education. Professionally, Sheila has worked as a classroom and special education teacher, school board resource person and faculty member. She has been active in the field of special education for many years and has been involved in policy and practical issues in the field. Co-chair of the Special Education Transformation Document as well as co-author of Special Education in Ontario Schools, Sheila has dedicated her career to working with educators and students in her chosen field. Her research interests include special education policy, inclusion, acquired brain injury and aboriginal education.
Dr. Tiffany L. Gallagher is an associate professor in the Department of Teacher Education. She teaches courses in educational psychology and assessment and evaluation. She has co-authored the texts Educational Psychology (3rd Canadian Ed.) and Classroom Assessment: Concepts and Applications (2nd Canadian Ed.). Professionally, Tiffany was an administrator and diagnostician in supplemental education for over a decade. Her current research interests include literacy assessment, reading and writing strategy instruction, the role of the special education teacher, teachers with learning disabilities and post-secondary education for persons with disabilities. Her research interests include literacy assessment and evaluation, learning strategies for reading and writing instruction, role of the special education teacher and integration, tutoring, teachers with learning disabilities and post-secondary education for persons with disabilities.
