It’s Thursday evening and you hang up the phone. That’s right. The day is finally here. You’ve just found out that you’ve been offered an interview with one of the top companies in your field. You’ve waited years to hear this news, but now the panic sets in. Are you ready for this?
Don’t despair. Sit down. Catch your breath. Thankfully, there are people and resources available to help you get ready. To begin, you will need to know what the employer is looking for so you can prepare accordingly.
The employer’s perspective:
The decision regarding whether or not to hire a candidate is usually based on a number of different factors. Employers will be considering your behaviour before, during and after the interview based on the following areas:
First impression – Are you dressed appropriately for the interview? Are you punctual?
Knowledge of self – Are you able to provide concrete proof of your skills, abilities and accomplishments? Are you aware of your strengths and weaknesses and the areas that need further development? Are you able to market your degree to the employer? Do you know what your career goals are?
Research skills – Have you demonstrated genuine interest in the company by doing the necessary research for the position?
Listening skills – Do you show sincere interest in the organization and others by listening without interrupting, maintaining eye contact and demonstrating appropriate body language and posture?
Verbal communication skills – Do you use appropriate grammar and vocabulary? Is your tone of voice clear and confident?
Written communication skills – Do you know how to correspond in a business-like manner when writing letters, e-mails and text messaging?
Social skills – Is the content of your answers appropriate for a recruiting situation? Are you aware of proper table manners if your interview takes place over lunch hour or dinnertime? Can you demonstrate your ability to work with others in a team environment?
