Professors Awarded International Course Support Fund

Led by Brock professors who wanted to develop courses that would allow students to experience the course subject matter in “real-time” and in “real-life” international contexts, Brock International is pleased to announce three new international course offerings for students this Winter and Spring terms.  Students in Child & Youth Studies, History and Sport Management will have the opportunity to be taught by their Brock Professors in Namibia, Germany and Peru!  These new course developments would not have been possible without the “champion” Brock professor in each case, as well as the strong support of their academic department colleagues and Faculty Deans, as well as the International Course Support Fund (ICSF).

The ICSF is an annual competitive process, open to all academic units across all Faculties at Brock, adjudicated by a subcommittee of the Internationalization Committee.

This year’s successful applicants are:

Dr. Kirsty Spence, Associate Professor & Chair of Sport Management

• SPMA 4P93: Sport for Development Field Experience: This will provide Brock Sports Management students with a truly unique international sport for development experience in Peru.  This course also has a partnership with Solidarity Experiences Abroad in order to partner with well-established community groups and sites for the student field experiences.

Dr. Heather Chalmers, Associate Professor, Department of Child & Youth Studies

• CHYS 3V98: Resilience in an International Context: This course will provide Brock Child and Youth Studies students with their first truly unique international field course experience in Namibia.  This course will also be working to build on a partnership with well-established University connections in Windhoek through the Office of International Services & Programs Abroad, who has led student groups there for a number of years in Brock Abroad programs.

Dr. Elizabeth Vlossak, Associate Professor, Department of History

• HIST 3M50: Modern Germany in Berlin: This course will provide Brock History Majors with an in-depth understanding and appreciation for the history of Berlin by way of this unique “study abroad” opportunity.  They will also be connecting with local University partners, such as Freie Universität Berlin, one of the leading research institutions in Germany and Europe.
