Brock Cares Day of Service 2012 Project Site Organizations

<div>          Canadian Blood Services is a not-for-profit, charitable organization whose sole mission is to manage the blood and blood products supply for Canadians. To this end, Canadian Blood Services:</div><ul><li>Collects approximately 850,000 units of blood annually and processes it into the components and products that are administered to thousands of patients each year.</li><li>Manages the <span>OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network</span> whose mission is to secure, in an expeditious way, donors for Canadian bone marrow transplant patients and for patients abroad.</li><li>Screens every donor and tests each unit of blood or blood product collected for a variety of transmissible diseases.</li><li>Ensures that Canadian transfusion medicine research and development remains at the cutting edge.</li></ul><div>         Canadian Blood Services is committed to blood safety. In addition to the effective screening and testing processes, this pursuit of safety is reflected in every branch of its organizational structure and in each management and operational decision that is made.</div> [1]

<p> </p><div>          In December, 1993, the coucil at the Regional Municipality of Niagara authorized staff to organize and implement an Adopt-a-road program as a public service program for volunteers to pick up litter along certain Regional rights-of-way. It is a way for certain environmentally conscientious citizens, community and civic organizations, private business and industry to contribute to a cleaner environment and a more beautiful Regional road system.</div><div>          Under the program, groups and individuals agree to adopt a section of Regional right-of-way and keep it clean. In addition to the satisfaction gained by providing a cleaner environment, the volunteers are recognized by a sign erected by the Region acknowledging their efforts.</div><p><br /> </p> [2]

<p></p><div>          The United Way funds many programs and charitable organizations that benefit our community. It helps to fill the gaps left between government programs and the available funds of low income families. It is a staggering reality that 1 in 6 families in the Niagara Region live in poverty. Each year Brock University’s faculty and staff host a United Way campaign to raise funds for the United Way and the 65 programs funded by the United Way of St. Catharines & District. Last year Brock’s campaign rose over $102,000 for the United Way!</div> [3]

<p>         Youth University is a premier educational resource for pre-university aged Ontario youth dedicated to helping children meet their greatest potential—socially, emotionally, and academically.</p><ul type="disc"><li>Our programs are meaningful, engaging, active and fun.</li><li>We foster confidence through individual attention and a supportive, caring, and inclusive community.</li><li>We encourage a path of life-long learning by tapping into the natural curiosity of young people.</li><li>Our programs are backed by sound pedagogy and research.</li></ul> [4]

<p>          <span>Literacy Link Niagara (LLN) is a regional coalition of literacy programs committed to adult basic education. This incorporated, non-profit organization was created in 1991 to provide a network for shared information and resources and a continuum of quality adult basic education services.</span><br />          The 12 member programs meet the needs of adult students in the community and offer many ways to upgrade or improve their literacy skills such as one to one tutoring or peer/group work. There are four streams of literacy programs: Francophone, Anglophone, Native and Deaf. <br />          Literacy Link Niagara also offers Clear Writing Services. <span>Clear writing is about the way you communicate in writing.  It’s about the language you use, the format of your document and the design of your document.  It helps you say what you mean, simply and clearly.  The purpose of Clear Writing is to speak to your audience.  It does not “dumb-down” your document.  It considers the people who will be reading your document.  Clear Writing helps us get the information across quickly and efficiently. This service includes organization audits, </span><span>document consultation and workshop facilitation.<br /><br /></span></p> [5]

<p> </p><div>The Ontario Brain Injury Association (OBIA) is a provincial not-for-profit, charitable organization.  Our mission is to enhance the lives of Ontarians living with the effects of acquired brain injury (ABI) through education, awareness and support. OBIA’s services include:</div><ul type="disc"><li>Information and resources on acquired brain injury</li><li>1-800 toll free helpline</li><li>Personal advocacy and support</li><li>Training and education for families and professionals</li></ul> [6]

<p></p><div>          This year marks the 61st annual Wine Country celebration of Niagara’s internationally acclaimed grape and wine industry for two weekends in September. The Niagara Wine Festival consists of more than 100 events including winery tours and tastings, concerts, Niagara cuisine, wine seminars, family entertainment and one of Canada’s largest street parades. The Niagara Wine Festival has been selected as one of Ontario’s top 100 Festivals by Festivals and Events Ontario.</div> [7]

<p>          Start Me Up Niagara provides opportunities for individuals that assist them to increase their level of self sufficiency and quality of life by improving health, integrating into the community and earning income. It works with individuals who have multiple issues including mental illness, disabilities, addictions, and past traumatic life experiences.These individuals face poverty, unemployment, homelessness, marginalization and stigma. They lack the necessary social determinants for health and as a result are not accessing the community resources necessary for a satisfactory or acceptable standard of living. SMUN is committed to removing service access barriers for individuals who have complex needs. Meeting people where ‘they are at’ and giving them the time and support needed to move forward are core service values.</p> [8]

<p>          Hope Furniture Bank collects gently used home furnishing in order to provide individuals and families in Niagara Region with the beds, tables, chairs and other furnishings that turn “shelter” into “homes”. The members of your community that receive these items are referred by organizations like: Ontario Works, Ontario Disability Support Programs, Canadian Mental Health Association, Public Health, Family and Children’s Services, YWCA – Shelters and Transitional Housing, Hope Centre, Port Cares and Community Care St. Catharines. Since becoming a charity January 1, 2008 Hope Furniture Bank has been helping families and continues to grow within the Niagara Region. The organization has provided furnishings to 289 households since inception. In 2009 Hope Furniture Bank furnished 53% more homes.<br /><br /> </p> [9]

<p>         Morningstar Mill is a small, picturesque industrial heritage site owned by the City of St. Catharines and operated by the Friends of Morningstar Mill. The mill was constructed in 1872 to grind wheat, oats, rye and barley into flour. It was one of the first mills in Ontario to be powered by a turbine rather than a traditional water wheel. The majority of the original equipment in the mill is still functional. Located on Niagara Escarpment at Decew Falls, the site also includes a turbine shed, a sawmill, a blacksmith, a carpentry shop, and the home of the Morningstar’s.  The grist mill and house are open to the public on Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends from May to the Thanksgiving weekend in October.</p> [10]

<p>          The Lincoln County Humane Society is a charitable not-for-profit organization dedicated to the humane treatment of all animals; to alleviate their suffering and neglect, support the human-animal bond and foster an environment in which people respect all living creatures. We will provide safe refuge and compassionate care for animals.We will pursue workable solutions to the most urgent animal welfare issues of our community, which are animal overpopulation and homelessness. These solutions will emphasize the mutual benefits of bringing pets and people together. We will provide rescue and control as a lifeline to animals in need, as a necessary service to our community.We will encourage and provide for pet adoption, animal assisted therapy, pet care education, spay and neuter program and investigations of cruelty and neglect. As a not-for-profit organization we shall operate these programs with integrity, in a financially responsible manner that secures a financially viable future for this organization with a strong commitment to fundraising and membership development.<br /><br /> </p> [11]

<div> <span>           The Heart and Stroke Foundation, a volunteer-based health charity, leads in eliminating heart disease and stroke and reducing their impact through the advancement of research and its application, the promotion of healthy living and advocacy.</span></div><div> <span>           The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada is a federation of 10 provincial Foundations, led and supported by a force of more than 130,000 volunteers.</span></div><ul type="disc"><li>Throughout its history, the Foundation has relied on the generous donations of millions of Canadians.</li><li>The Foundation receives no operational funding from government sources.</li><li>In 2010, the Foundation invested more than <span>$106 million into research, health promotion and community programs. </span></li></ul> [12]

<p>          The mission of the Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region is to improve the quality of life for people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and their caregivers. The primary role of the Alzheimer Society is to advocate for and partner in the provision of services to people with dementia and their caregiver. The Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region was founded in 1984 through the vision of a small group of family caregivers who wanted to share their experiences and lend support to other families. Over the next 4 years, the overwhelming need for services in the Region precipitated an application to the Ministry of Health for base funding to hire qualified counseling staff and in 1988, the Family Support Program was developed.<br /><br /> </p> [13]

<p>The mission of the Mayholme Foundation is to promote and assist genealogical and historical research by collecting, storing and preserving historic documents and materials. To bring the public an awareness the role our ancestors played in the history of our community. We are a non-profit charitable group dedicated to the study and collection of family history, and to preserve the heritage of families in the areas of old Lincoln and Welland Counties.<br /><br /> </p> [14]

<p>           Heart Niagara (1977) has a distinguished record of guiding advances in cardiac health education and services in Niagara that are yielding improvement in access to primary and secondary prevention programs, training in bystander CPR and public access defibrillation.<br />          Much goodwill exists for Heart Niagara for its considerable contributions to the Niagara health care agenda. This respected not-for-profit charitable organization has mapped out its direction and strategy for the next phase of its evolution. This juncture has allowed Heart Niagara to consider what’s possible, based on vision and values.<br />            Heart Niagara empowers our community to take control of heart health by providing children and adults with education, training and tools and through strategic partnerships. The Board of Directors with support from staff and consultants will provide greater detail on success indicators, timelines, and accountability to increase the success through to 2012.</p> [15]

<p>          Heartland Forest is a fully accessible nature experience with the goal of preserving and educating. This nature experience is driven by volunteers and donations and is a registered charitable organization. <span>Our facilities include trails, fishing pond, picnic shelters, informative signage, butterfly garden, observation and rest stations, playground, animal carvings, barrier free mini-putt with nature theme and one of the largest tree-houses in Canada offering a panoramic view of the forest - the ramp alone is over 200 feet long! Natural features include, frog and turtle ponds, Carolinian forest which features vernal pools and a rich inventory of unique species of birds, trees, and amphibians.<br /><br /></span></p> [16]

<p>          Since 1976 the Welland Heritage Council and Multicultural Centre has assisted thousands of immigrants overcome barriers to integration and watched with pride as they build new lives for themselves here in Canada. Our greatest contribution to our community is in helping immigrants gain the necessary skills to live and work in Canada, so that they can become successful contributing members of our society.</p> [17]

<p>          Upper Canada Lodge is a retirement home located in the heart of the quaint and historic village of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Upper Canada Lodge provides:</p><ul type="disc"><li>professional, compassionate, quality care</li><li><span>a wide range of amenities and activities</span></li><li><span>a voice for its residents through the Residents' Council and the Family Council</span></li><li>beautiful outdoor gardens and therapeutic park</li><li>paved pathway linking the grounds to the scenic Niagara Waterfront Trail which runs past historic Fort George</li></ul> [18]

<p>This year marks the fifth Touch a Truck event in Niagara! The biennial Touch a Truck fundraiser for children’s literacy aims to encourage early literacy by improving access to quality books for children up to the age of six and is an excellent opportunity for families to spend time together. The last four events have been extremely successful with over 20,000 families attending the event from Niagara and beyond. Children, parents, grandparents and other “young-at-heart” adults experienced dozens of “mighty machines” helping to raise money for children’s literacy.</p> [19]

<div>          Community Living – Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln was founded in 1965 by concerned community members and families. We are a non-profit organization with the mandate of providing services and support to people of all ages with a developmental disability.<br />           Residential Services of <em>Community Living-Grimsby, Lincoln, West Lincoln</em>, offers a variety of long term residential options for individuals within one of the 12 community homes. Individualized support ranges from 24 hour staffed group living to enhanced independent living. Additionally, 3 of these homes within the communities of Beamsville and Grimsby, offer accessible <span>Respite Services</span> dependent upon availability and the personal need of the individual. Each home’s support team provides individualized assistance and support in areas of life skills, social/leisure activities, communication, medication /treatments administration, behavioural interventions, physical/health related challenges, dietary preferences and sleep patterns.<br /><br /> </div> [20]
