Dr. Åsa Gerger Swartling

Education:
PhD in Sociology from the University of York, UK. Her doctoral thesis (2002) explored the potentials for involvement of citizens in technical matters of sustainable development policy in Sweden and the UK.

Bio:
“Åsa Gerger Swartling specialises in participatory approaches to environmental management and policy”

Currently, Åsa is a senior research fellow at the SEI and a researcher at the Stockholm Resilience Centre (SRC) where she is theme leader for various research themes:

  •   Transforming Governance (SEI )
  • Adaptive Governance, Networks and Learning (theme co-leader, SRC).
  • Knowledge Management, Learning and Social Networks (past theme co- leader, SRC)

With a focus on the areas of climate change, urban environment, energy and rural development, Åsa has been involved in various projects dealing with stakeholder engagement, learning, sustainability assessment, project evaluation and policy integration. For example, she was the SEI project leader if the European Commission funded Urban Lifestyles, Sustainability and Integrated Environmental Assessment project (4th framework programme) as well as the Methods and Tools for Integrated Sustainability Assessment (Matisse) project (6th framework programme).

Åsa is currently leading the project “The Process of Adaptation to Climate Change” under the Mistra-SWECIA programme. This project focuses on stakeholder perceptions, participation, collaboration and learning in the context of climate change adaptation in Sweden.
