A researcher with international business savvy is bringing that expertise to the Office of Research Services at Brock University.
John Wilson, who most recently worked as a project manager in the Technology Transfer Office at Oxford University, has joined the TTO team at Brock as the Director of Business Development and Commercialization.
In this role, Wilson will assist Niagara and area businesses connect with Brock researchers who have potential solutions to their research and development challenges. Wilson will expand Brock’s business development portfolio through commercialization options for intellectual property, to the benefit of Brock and the broader community.
Under Wilson’s leadership, Brock’s Technology Transfer Office will also enhance its ability to assist small- and medium-sized local businesses by developing outreach activities and programs, and promoting shared funding opportunities from the local, national and international level. This strategy will work to solidify Brock’s partnership capabilities ahead of the opening of the Business Incubator in the Cairns Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex. The incubator will take relevant technologies from Brock and beyond and help build innovative companies for the region.
Wilson earned a PhD from Bristol University in the UK, training as a chemist before spending five years as a researcher at Virginia Tech, and later Bristol University.
The UK native then worked as a product developer for Unilever in England, achieving product launches in Eastern Europe, North America and Asia.
After that, Wilson ran a start-up company, financed from venture capital, which develops novel electronic and optical technologies. To date, the company, Spiral Scratch Limited, has also had successful product launches in Europe.
