An advantage of being a Brock nursing student has been having the opportunity to not only learn about nursing and providing healthcare locally but also nursing internationally. Recently, we participated in a medical mission to Peru where we were able to use the knowledge and skills we learned at Brock to provide health care to the less advantaged people living in the shantytowns of Lima.
We had the opportunity to visit the homes and better understand the lifestyles of the people, learning everything from their challenges to the strengths of their communities. Alongside nurses and physicians, from various locations and backgrounds, we worked as a team to assess the needs and provide care in areas from gynecology and medicine to dentistry and psychiatry. We feel very fortunate to have had this empowering experience and we have grown personally and professionally through it.
We have felt that we were genuinely needed and appreciated as we used our nursing skills to care for the people and we were able to observe how our work was helping to improve the health and well-being of the people. This experience has contributed to a long-term desire to pursue international nursing in the future.
