image/png iconHow does environmental economics relate to sustainability/ESRC?
As an environmental Economist, I try to understand the two-way linkages between the environment and the economy. Economic activities such as mining, forestry and international trade all potentially have impacts on the environment. Similarly, the environment provides Canadian society and economy with much of value. My particular research interest currently is the economics of water resources. Canada is widely seen as a ‘water-rich’ country but we are already experiences water shortages in many regions. In addition, past under-pricing has led to unsustainable water use levels and deteriorating infrastructure. I’m interested in understanding what factors influence households’ and businesses’ water use and employing that information to design incentives (such as water prices) that will promote efficient and sustainable water use.
