Brock International Speaker Series: Martha Melesse, Senior Program Officer, Program & Partnership Branch of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC)
On Friday Febrary 11, 2011, as part of International Development Week, Brock International hosted Martha Melesse, Senior Program Officer in Globalization, Growth and Poverty at IDRC. Martha gave an interesting talk entitled “Gender, Equity, and Access to Health Care: Health Financing Reform in Sub-Saharan Africa”. Martha presented briefly on the structure of IDRC, and in particular regarding the Canadian Partnership Branch which recently issued a new call for proposals, to encourage universities to apply for funds to support new initiatives such as multi-disciplinary conferences that bring together North-South researchers. She also shared with us her extensive resesearch on "social health insurance" in developing country contexts, referring to her knowledge and experience of the Ghanaian National Health Insurance scheme that was first introduced in 2004. Martha shared with us her findings around who really benefited from the new social health insurance.
While at Brock University, Martha was also able to connect with various faculty and staff interested in research partnerships and related initiatives with IDRC.
