How about a truly inspiring opportunity to further both your professional and academic careers! We are seeking Brock University students to lead canoeing, backpacking and rock climbing trips for incoming Brock students during August 2015.
Brock BaseCamp is a unique orientation program that facilitates outdoor trip experiences for incoming Brock University students prior to their arrival on campus. We are currently hiring highly motivated outdoor trip leaders from our student population across the university.
What to Expect
Expect an experience you will never forget. You will have the opportunity to spend your summer travelling in some of Ontario’s great wilderness areas, including the lakes of Algonquin Provincial Park, the Ganaraska Hiking Trail and the limestone cliffs of Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area on the Niagara Escarpment. You and a co-leader will be responsible for leading groups of incoming Brock students on five day (Canoeing or Backpacking) or three day (Rock Climbing) outdoor trips in August. BaseCamp employees are paid competitive industry wages while working, and have the opportunity to work a variety of different trips in one summer season. All trips occur during the weekdays, with some training, prep and wrap-up occurring on weekends.

*Your trip log can be as simple as a list of personal and professional outdoor trips in which you have participated or lead. Give as much detail as possible such as type of trip (e.g., canoe, rock climbing, mountaineering), number of days, route, and the population with whom you worked (e.g., high school students, friends, etc.).

Frequently Asked Questions for Prospective Trip Leaders
Q: What Faculty or Department do I have to be in to qualify as a BaseCamp trip leader?
A: BaseCamp trip leaders come from Faculties all across the University including Graduate Studies. We try to have as diverse a pool of leaders as possible that help us represent the many strengths we have to offer as a comprehensive university.
Q: Is housing included in my summer contract?
A: No, unfortunately housing is not included as part of your BaseCamp contract. However, most BaseCamp trips start and end at the Brock University campus making it easy for you to get to work if you live in an around the St. Catharines area.
Q: Do I have to commit to working a whole season or can I work a selection of BaseCamp trips?
A: Depending on our staffing situation, you may be required to work a whole season or only a selection of trips.
Q: Is there staff training? Do I have to attend?
A: We higher very capable, competent and certified staff. Due to this we do not run a beginning of the year formal staff training, we do however run a staff orientation prior to the start of each trip. All staff are required to attend these staff orientations.
Q: How much will I get paid while working for BaseCamp?
A: BaseCamp is pleased to offer industry competitive wages to all leaders. Your pay bracket will be assessed based on a variety of criteria. Some of which include your level of first aid certification, driver’s license classification, level of outdoor experience, leadership role on the trip, etc. Your pay bracket will be assessed prior to the beginning of employment with BaseCamp and may increase during the summer season. Generally, lead trip staff will make somewhere between $125-$150 per day. Assistant trip staff can make between $75-$125 per day.
Q: Where can I get first aid training?
A: There are many different providers that offer comprehensive first aid training courses. One provider that offers internationally recognized certifications is Wilderness Medical Associates Canada.
Q: What if I have the qualifications but do not have any camping/ rock climbing equipment of my own?
A: Not a problem. BaseCamp is fortunate to have access to both technical outdoor gear and camping equipment, which you can use while employed with the BaseCamp program. We do require that you provide your own personal outdoor clothing.
