Child and Youth Studies

Main heading:
Welcome to the Department of Child and Youth Studies

Our multidisciplinary department is committed to providing students with a rich educational experience that will prepare them for professional or academic careers in schools, hospitals, community agencies or universities. The department has been offering undergraduate degrees since 1993, and an MA since 2000.
Our faculty includes many nationally and internationally recognized scholars who work to high standards for teaching and research. Our staff work closely with them to guide out students through their programs. We are all approachable, and dedicated to maintaining the highest quality of education.

Brief Information about our Program

Child and Youth Studies (CHYS) is one of the most popular programs at Brock. You will learn from a broad-based approach that considers the individual child or youth within the context of the family, school, peer group and community. With interdisciplinary roots in psychology, education, sociology, cultural studies and criminology, our degree gives you the academic background to pursue a wide variety of careers or to pursue further studies in a Master's program. Field placements in schools and agencies will give you valuable experience for your résumé.

Students who are majoring in Child and Youth Studies have the option to complete a collaborative program. Students will complete the requirements of a 4-year BA Honours in Child and Youth Studies and Child and Youth Worker diploma program at Durham College. If you are interested in applying to a collaborative program please contact Jo Stewart for more information.
The Concurrent Honours BA Child and Youth Studies/BEd is a limited enrolment program, offering a unique integration of academic and teacher-education courses throughout five years of study.
