Brock University will bestow four distinguished Canadians with honorary degrees at this year’s Spring Convocation, which takes place during seven ceremonies over five days, from Tuesday, June 9 to Saturday, June 13.
This year, Brock takes pride in awarding honorary degrees to The Honourable Belinda Stronach, PC (Chair of the Belinda Stronach Foundation) and Rick Mercer (comedian and host of The Rick Mercer Report) co-founders of Spread The Net; Richard Howden Tomlinson, teacher, researcher, inventor and entrepreneur; and Roy Cairns, President, Charlesway Corporation; Senior Counsel, Chown, Cairns LLP, St. Catharines (retired).
All ceremonies will be held in the Walker Complex at the west end of campus, in the Ian D. Beddis gymnasium. An outdoor reception for graduates, family members and other special guests will be held after each ceremony. Tickets are not required. All guests are welcome at the Convocation ceremonies.
The four honorary degree presentations will proceed as follows:
Tuesday, June 9, 10 a.m.
An honorary degree will be presented to The Honourable Belinda Stronach, PC and Rick Mercer:
Brock University is recognizing The Honourable Belinda Stronach, PC and comedian Rick Mercer for their combined efforts toward humanitarian outreach in the area of global health. Their combined advocacy to combat malaria affecting some of the world’s most disadvantaged people has captured the imagination of the world in the form of the Spread the Net campaign, which they both co-founded.
Friday, June 12, 10 a.m.
An honorary degree will be presented to Richard Howden Tomlinson, distinguished teacher, inventor and entrepreneur:
Brock University is recognizing Dr. Richard Tomlinson’s extraordinary commitment to education, research, entrepreneurship and philanthropy. As a teacher, mentor, philanthropist, and entrepreneur, it is small wonder that the Government of Canada appointed him to the Order of Canada. Although the citation is for philanthropy – it could just have easily been for any of the above areas.
Saturday, June 13, 10 a.m.
An honorary degree will be presented to Roy Cairns, President, Charlesway Corporation; Senior Counsel – Chown, Cairns LLP (retired): Brock is recognizing Roy Cairns for his contributions to the region and distinguished service to the growth and development of the University. His commitment to the community and entrepreneurial success has few parallels – as demonstrated by the dedication of his time and financial resources. Cairns was also an early supporter of establishing a university in Niagara, having contributed to the Brock University Founding Fund.
