Come to Brock and see the world.
With a campus located in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in a region that is one of the world's premier tourism destinations, our program offers plenty of exceptional learning opportunities right in our own spectacular back yard. But as wonderful as these domestic opportunities may be, we're also strong believers in the importance of an international perspective, and have designed a number of international learning opportunities right into our degree program.
TREN has formal program linkages with university programs in New Zealand, Croatia, Thailand and Hong Kong, and many other opportunities for study in nations worldwide through Brock's many international exchange programs.
TREN Term Abroad Program
We're particularly proud of our TREN Term Abroad Program, an innovative international experiential learning opportunity that takes students abroad for a full term, combining formal university instruction at an international partner university with extensive field studies in the host nation. As a participant in the Term Abroad program, you will travel abroad for an entire academic term, living and studying in an intensive international context. You will be fully immersed in student life at a university overseas, studying with local students and professors. You'll also be accompanied by a Brock professor in residence who knows the country well, and who will deliver additional Brock courses to you in classrooms and field destinations in the host nation. During or at the end of your university stay, you will take part in an intensive field course to explore tourist destinations, ecozones, and sustainable tourism issues in the host nation. The entire TREN Term Abroad program takes place within the time frame of a regular academic term, and carries the same number of credits as a regular term at Brock, so you do not have to compromise summer employment opportunities or take make-up courses to complete your degree.
Debuting in 2013, the TREN Term Abroad now takes place in Thailand, with a 16-week term of residence at Burapha University International College. Field excursions occur at intervals throughout the term, exploring many diverse regions of the country. A multi-day transit stop in Hong Kong exposes participants to another vibrant destination en route.
From 2009 through 2012, the TREN Term Abroad took place in New Zealand, beginning with a formal progam of study at the University of Otago and culminating with a 3-week long field course from the furthest reaches of the south island to the extreme tip of the north island.
TREN International Field Courses
For those who prefer a shorter but equally intensive international study opportunity, TREN offers a number of international field courses at destinations around the world. Ranging from one to three weeks in duration, these courses offer a concentrated and affordable international field experience in the company of a Brock instructor. Since 2007, program destinations have included Croatia, Thailand and Hong Kong. Check with the Department to determine this year's destination.
Students in good academic standing are also encouraged to consider studying abroad for a term or a year with one of Brock's many international exchange partners. The Office of International Services can assist all academically qualified Brock students to locate a university exchange partner abroad and set up a custom program of studies which will complement your degree program at Brock. Most students go on exchange in their third year. Note that you must plan in advance - applications for exchange are usually solicited when you are in your second year of study at Brock. Contact the Office of International Services for further details.
