Research
My research focuses on the interconnected topics of place, outdoor recreation, and outdoor leadership education. My current research projects explore how human dimensions of place can inform sustainable outdoor recreation practice and resource management. I am also a member of a research team, which explores how sense of community evolves and changes during organized wilderness trip experiences. I have written theoretical and conceptual place-based papers and book chapters within a variety outdoor experiential contexts. My work has recently appeared in the Journal of Leisure Research, Controversial Issues in Adventure Programming, and within the environmental studies curriculum of the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Finally, I am working on an introductory textbook about outdoor recreation in North America.
