How to Make a Referral
While some students may not be aware that Brock provides a counselling service, others though aware, still find it difficult to seek assistance from a counsellor. Students are more likely to follow through successfully in counselling if you can project an attitude that says you think seeing a counsellor is a positive, proactive step which will benefit them. You can help normalize taking the step to enter counselling by suggesting that lots of students, in their position, have found it helpful to talk things through with a counsellor. You can also tell them that our experience is that the sooner a student who is struggling can connect with a Counsellor the quicker they can return to getting the most out of their Brock experience.
Students can make an appointment with one of our Counsellor/Therapists by calling 905-688-5550 extension 4750 during regular office hours. Experience has shown us that it is best if the student calls and sets up the appointment time themselves. If you wish to help with this you can offer the student support as they call to make the appointment in your presence.
Once you have made the referral it is always advisable to follow-up a few days later by asking the student a general question like "How did it go?" This will get them talking about what they feel comfortable sharing without them feeling they are being interrogated and at the same time you can confirm for yourself that they followed through with the appointment.
