With over 20 years of experiential education experience, Mary Breunig will be recognized for her commitment to teaching excellence.

The Recreation and Leisure Studies Associate Professor has been chosen as the winner of the 2014 Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences.

The faculty teaching award is presented annually to the professor in each faculty who, in the opinion of his or her students and peers, has displayed the qualities of superior teaching, enthusiasm for the discipline and interests in the needs of students.

“As a teacher, Mary is thoughtful and intentional in her efforts to engender learners who are critically aware and self-reflexive about the teaching and learning process.” explained Erin Sharpe, who is an Associate Professor in the Department of Recreation & Leisure Studies.

“She challenges her students to take ownership for their learning and actively seeks out way to transform the classroom from a ‘sit and be told’ teaching structure to a structure in which students take the lead in determining, for themselves, what they need to learn and how to learn it.”

A number of professional achievements distinguish Breunig's pursuit of excellence, including past-presidency for the Association for Experiential Education, and most recently being named the Director of the Brock University Social Justice Research Institute.

“Mary’s experiential approach is deeply authentic in that it is a full expression of her personhood, her program of research, and the lens through which she interacts with learners and the world,” says Garrett Hutson, who is an Associate Professor in the Department of Recreation & Leisure Studies.

“While her expertise in recreation and leisure studies, social and environmental justice, and outdoor education are all deeply impressive on their own individually, it is the way she delivers these knowledges through an experiential lens that sets her apart from other pedagogues.”
