To strengthen our Academic Writing Community, the Faculty of Education held its 4th annual academic writing retreat from June 3-7, 2012, at Crieff Hills Community Centre in Puslinch, ON.
Our 2011 writing retreat resulted in at least nine published scholarly papers, two conference proposals and one invited presentation.
This year, the faculty collaborated for the second time with the University of Windsor’s Faculty of Education in planning and organizing the retreat.
In preparation for this event, Dr. Dragana Martinovic (Faculty of Education Research Leadership Chair, University of Windsor) was invited in March 2012 to facilitate the Writing with Mixed Methods Data workshop at Brock University.
At the 2012 Academic Writing Retreat, the team of three facilitators (Dr. Michelle McGinn, Ms. Snezana Ratkovic and Dr. Dragana Martinovic) supported each participant to produce a scholarly paper through a program that combined extensive quiet writing time with collegial discussion through works-in-progress groups and informal workshops.
Participants shared personal strategies to sustain their individual writing, which have been subsequently implemented by other participants. The sharing of references and resources, along with calls for papers and proposals, as well as the strengthening of personal connections, have all contributed to the productivity and impact of participants’ work. At least two writing projects from the 2012 retreat have already been submitted for publication.
The Dean's Discretionary Fund, Faculty of Education, Brock University and the Research Leadership Chair Fund, Faculty of Education, University of Windsor subsidized costs for the retreat.
The academic writing retreat was a success, as two projects have already been submitted for publication.
