Brock University’s Wind Ensemble presents “Showtime through the Ages”

Published on November 21 2011

On Tuesday, Nov. 29, the Department of Music’s University Wind Ensemble will explore the full breadth of wind ensemble repertoire as they present an evening of captivating melodies from Giuseppe Verdi to Maynard Ferguson, held at the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre at 7:30 p.m.

The University Wind Ensemble enjoys a rich tradition of providing positive, life-enhancing experiences for young people through the study and performance of wind band literature. Talented brass, woodwind, and percussion performers engage with their peers and conductor while pursuing their passion and enjoyment of music through creative expression.

Under the baton of conductor Zoltan Kalman, this ensemble is comprised of 55 musicians drawn from the Brock community, local high schools, and Niagara's classical music community, including the Niagara Symphony and Symphony on the Bay Hamilton. Seasoned professional players will perform together with talented University students, as well as high school students from Beamsville Secondary School (Jennifer Yurkiw), E.L. Crossley Secondary School (Katie Bishop and Tia Julien), Notre Dame College School (Sterling Demers, Greg Lipinski and Steven Rubio), and West Park Secondary School (Yuuki Hachitori).

The evening’s program, entitled “Showtime through the Ages,” features masterworks of the past and present including Giuseppe Verdi - Manzoni Requiem, Philip Sparke - Fiesta de la Vida, Alan Hovaness - Prayer of Saint Gregory (featuring Brock University’s own Steven Pettes on trumpet), Maynard Ferguson - Maynard Madness, and Vince Gassi - Invocation and Psalm.

Matthew Royal, Chair of the Department of Music at Brock states, “The University Wind Ensemble represents the unifying power of music: it brings together Brock students, students from local high-schools, as well as seasoned musical veterans from the Niagara region and southern Ontario. The Music Department is proud to present this varied and engaging group of musicians.”

Join us on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m., in the Sean O'Sullivan Theatre, Brock University, and discover established and emerging wind repertoire! Tickets are $5.00 general admission, and can be purchased at the door, or at the Centre for the Arts Box Office: 905-688-5550 x 3257.
