Published on March 23 2011

The adjudication of the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences' Award for Teaching Excellence was held on Friday March 11th. The Intrim Dean Joanne MacLean announced today that Dr. Tim O'Connell, in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies, is the 2011 Award recipient.

Dr. Tim O'Connell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies. His impact in the area of innovation and leadership in teaching and learning is evident both within the classroom and beyond. In addition to innovative and experiential teaching practices in field-based and theory courses, he has contributed to the curricular development of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies (through his contribution to the redesign of the outdoor recreation curriculum and the development of a new outdoor education learning centre/research lab); by facilitating University partnerships nationally and internationally (e.g. Outward Bound Canada, National Outdoor Leadership School); and, most recently, as the lead on a new wilderness orientation initiative for Brock University students accepted into their first-year (Brock BaseCamp). This orientation program, facilitated by 3rd and 4th year students, teaches technical skills and campus life knowledge as a way to enhance student retention. In addition to Tim's area of disciplinary scholarship in the field of wilderness philosophy, program management and leadership theory, his publications in the area of the scholarship of teaching focuses on the use and effectiveness of reflective journaling. Tim will receive his award at spring convocation, June 9th, 2011 at 10:00 am.

Membership on the adjudication committee consisted of Joyce Engle (Department of Nursing); Nancy Francis (Department of Physical Education and Kinesiology); Julie Stevens (Department of Sport Management); Michael Fawkes (Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies); Kelsey Pinch (MA candidate); and Jill Grose (Associate Director, Centre for Teaching, Learning and Educational Technologies). Anna Lathrop, Associate Dean, served as chair and a non-voting member of the committee. Our thanks to those who served on this committee, and also to those who nominated and supported other faculty nominees. Each of the candidates presented exceptionally strong dossiers, and it is indeed affirming to see such an impressive pool of nominees.

Congratulations to Tim O'Connell
