Nicol Competition Winners Announced

We are pleased to announce the winners of the 2011 Nicol Competition
FIRST: Conquer Climbing Center: Mark Bittorf and Michael Churey
SECOND: Studio Niagara: Patrick Orvidas and Justin Duc
THIRD: CanArt: Catherine Hurley and Carolyn Halinda
The winning Brock team will receive a $5,000 cash prize, the second place team receives $2,000 and the third place team, $1,000.
The Brock 1st place winners will then compete nationally and if successful will be invited to the National Finals in Ottawa.
The Nicol Award is a national program designed to generate and reward interest in entrepreneurship on the part of undergraduate students in any faculty or field of study at participating universities across Canada. Launched in 1997, this program now awards over $100,000 in prize money each year to individual students or student teams who submit winning plans for their entrepreneurial business ideas.
In 2010, the winning team from Brock University, Nico Verhoef and Marty Verhey were named the Winners of the 2010 National Nicol Award at the 6th Annual Nicol Entrepreneurial Awards held at the Chateau Laurier on March 30th. Nico and Marty impressed the national judges with their plan for Perfect Patch™r producing high-quality, lower-cost, locally-grown certified organic strawberries.

Faculty of Business Representative - Dr. H.F. (Herb) MacKenzie
Dr. MacKenzie is Chair and a professor in the Marketing, International Business, and Strategy Department at Brock University. He has taught at universities in Canada, Europe, and the Middle East, and is a consultant to both the private- and public-sector. He has authored and co-authored textbooks on personal selling, sales management, and marketing, and has edited numerous Canadian marketing casebooks. He has been recognized by his students in recent years as Professor of the Year, Marketing Professor of the Year, and twice with the Faculty of Business Faculty Award of Excellence.
Janet Allan – Associate Partner, KPMG
Janet Allan is a chartered accountant and an associate partner with KPMG, in St. Catharines. She provides a wide range of services for her clients, including audit, accounting, income tax (both personal and corporate) and general business advisory services. Janet’s responsibilities include overall responsibility for co-ordinating all services to her client, and ensuring that the highest quality services are provided. She currently serves a Client Services Partner for a variety of profit and non-profit clients. Janet obtained her Bachelor of Mathematics in the co-op accounting program from the University of Waterloo.
Doug Frazer – Chair of the Niagara Angel Network etc.
Doug Frazer is a recently retired CEO of a Manufacturing Company and currently operates an Investment Holding Company in Niagara Falls. He is Chairman of the Niagara Growth Fund, Chairman of the Niagara Entrepreneur of the Year Awards and a Founding Director of both the Niagara Angel Network and the Niagara Venture Forum. Doug is currently President of the International Packaged Concrete Manufacturers Association and sits on the Board of Directors of 7 Canadian Companies.
Laura MacDonell – Owner, Water Superstore
Laura MacDonell graduated from Brock University in 2000 with a major in entrepreneurship. She took over her family’s purified water business and doubled the business revenue in the first year of operation. Her business, Water Superstore, now operates 2 retail locations, a large water delivery business and a water treatment service business. Current expansion plans include installing automatic WaterBar's across Southern Ontario. Being "green" and protecting the environment are very important to Laura. She resides in St. Catharines with her husband Chris and two children Sidney 5 and Logan 3.
