Visa graduate Susan Kyle recently completed a 3F99 independent study with Professor Murray Kropf. Her project was to assist in the production of a major commission being executed by sculptor Reinhard Reitzenstein, which was manufactured at a foundry owned and operated by foundry-master William Jurgenson. Part of her project in this practicum was the production of an instructional video describing the processes involved in foundry-based sculptural work.
The movie features some of the processes required to make a bronze sculpture. Designing and building the spruing and feeding system for the bronze to flow easily through the sculpture, building and dismantling the kiln, heating the investment molds (that contain the sculpture), safely pouring the bronze, removing the investment mold to reveal the sculpture pieces (rock pieces that will get welded together to form the rocks on each end of the bridge). The sculpture is titled Distant Bridge that is now installed at the Mona Lisa condominium in North York, Ontario.
