Mathematics Department Math Camps

  • The Department of Mathematics hosts a five-day residential CMS Mathematics Camp. The five-day Camp is a mathematics enrichment camp designed primarily for Canadian students in grades 9 through 10. Participation in the Camp is by invitation only. The selection of some 30 participants is based on the results of the Cayley and Pascal math contests (top scoring students from the geographic area between Toronto, Windsor, and Owen Sound to the north). The camp is sponsored by the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS).

  • From 1996 until 2004 the Department of Mathematics hosted a residential camp for Aboriginal students. The department hosted students from four Six Nations schools (I.L. Thomas, Oliver M. Smith, Emily C. General, and J.C. Hill).

The hosting of the camp is the expression of Brock's commitment to advancing the cause of mathematics and sciences education among First Nations students as noted by the department chair in his opening remarks:

"... In this age where technological advances occur at a lightening speed, the mastery of sciences and mathematics is an essential key to the gates of brighter tomorrows: it will enable you to be the masters of the machines rather than their slaves; it will enable you to determine the course of progress rather than being a mere consumer; it will enable you to lead your people and your communities to the front row seat they very much deserve among nations ..."

Students were engaged in a variety of academic and social activities: labs, contests, field trips, swimming, dancing, etc... Funding for the camp was provided by the Ministry of Indian and Northern Affairs and material support by the University, the Faculty of Mathematics and Science, and the Department of Mathematics. The success of the camp would not have been possible without the guidance of the students' chaperones and teachers, the spirit and invested efforts of Eric Muller, Dot Miners, and the Brock students (Larry Moss, Margaret Macanowicz, Luo Wang, Alana King, Ryan Duschesne) who instructed the students and animated the activities.
